@gvwilson Great story by the Beaverton!

I recognize the photo:
It was taken in January of 2020 #StJohns #Newfoundland a few days after #SnowMageddon dumped about a meter of snow on us in a single day and shut the whole city down for a week.
Even grocery stores were closed for several days until the city managed to plow at least one lane of every street so people could even drive to the store.

That surely had to be what #2020 would be remembered for.

Digging out. Apparently we've been gifted 45cm by #MotherNature.... so far. Snow is forecasted to continue at a slower pace until Saturday morning.
Our electrician was scheduled to complete a few jobs today but we canceled because of the weather. He sent us a photo of his house in Alliston - just green grass and sunshine just 30 minutes west of us.

#Snowmageddon has forced me to enjoy more coffee, relax in my sunroom, and binge on some YouTube content. This got injected into my feed, and because I was born in 1956, it's absolutely accurate. OK... it's bullshit since every generation has endured tough times. I mean, my parents grew up in the depression and survived #WWII. But if you were born in this time period - 1950 to 1969 - use this as proof of your emotional and physical superiority. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need a nap.

So far, this latest ##Snowmageddon is nothing to call the military about. We've had periods of flurries, but nothing is sticking around. Watching the weather maps all day shows areas north and south of us are getting higher amounts but nothing serious. I'm calling it early, this one is a bust.

Good Morning #Canada
I'm relaxing in front of a fireplace with some freshly brewed coffee and watching the Weather Network map animation loop endlessly showing the forecasted snow that will hit us in the next 24 hours. It's hypnotic and distracts you from thinking about the 25-30cm expected accumulation. If you love snow, Canada is the place to be. In fact, almost two-thirds (65%) of Canada's land mass has annual snow cover for more than six months of the year. I read that on the internet, so it's true. I'll be one of the 24% of Canadians who own a #SnowBlower throwing the white stuff everywhere, including back into my face. About half of Canadian households on the east coast own a Snow Blower versus 7% in British Columbia. Apparently, 51% of residents in Barrie use snow clearing machines, which is a statistic I should have paid attention to when we decided to move into this area.

Good Morning #Canada
Listening to Christmas tunes and watching the snow fall.

Notable Canadian snowstorms:
- 1913 Great Lakes Storm. The most destructive natural disaster on the Great Lakes, causing 250+ deaths & destroying 19 ships.
- 1941 March Blizzard: Brought 100 km/h winds and temps of -45°C to Saskatchewan and Manitoba, leading to the deaths of 72 people.
- 1944: 47 cm of snow hit Toronto in a single day. Unfortunately, the Canadian Army was overseas.
- 1971 Montreal: 45+ cm of snow on March 4th & wind gusts of 110 km/h. 200 Ski-Doo owners provided emergency transport.
- 1977: This blizzard struck Southern Ontario January 28 to February 1. Toronto DID NOT call the Army.
- 1999 Toronto Snowstorm: A series of snowfalls paralyze the city, total snowfall for January reached 118 cm. Yes, the mayor called the Army.
- 2007 February 2007: Storm hits Central and Eastern Canada, with Ottawa setting a single-day snowfall record of 35.7 cm.

YEEHAW! It's SNOWING in the CITY!

Not enough to play in. Just enough to go hysterical over and complain about.

Just got back from a trip to Toronto and all the highways and main roads are stripey from being sprayed with brine solution. MOT and municipalities are getting ready.

That's it! mowed my lawn for the last time this year! One last run, mulched all the leaves down into the soil. Wiped it clean and folded it up for the winter.

Pulled out my snowblower and snow shovels in anticipation of tomorrow's Snowmageddon!!! (5-10cm of snow depending on where you live in Ontario)

Even got to unearth the bags of snow melting salt I bought earlier this year in spring during the winter clearance sales.

Still gotta get my tires swapped... ugh.

Good Morning #Canada
I don't want to alarm you but... #WinterIsComing. That means it's time to start thinking about installing your #SnowTires because I don't want you behind me on a slippery slope if you're not prepared. Outside of Quebec, where winter tires are mandatory, over 76% of Canadians are putting on the special rubber to protect themselves and others. Atlantic Canada leads with 94% using winter tires, and tropical Saskatchewan and Manitoba have the lowest usage at 64%. But you need to be alert because 31% of Canadians surveyed say they won't buy or replace their snow tires because of affordability. The friendly rotund Michelin Man recommends that every vehicle should have snow tires from December 1st to March 15th. Why would he lie to us.

Australian Towns Shocked to See White Stuff Falling from the Sky

Does anyone remember Toronto’s Metromelt machines? They were a fleet of 5 large vehicles, $140,000 each in the 80s, that scooped up snow into a heated tank and reduced it to water that drained into the sewers. They were awesome to watch, but ultimately, fuel and maintenance costs put an end to their use, and they were mothballed. They were very helpful 25 years ago, when the army came to help Toronto.

Canadians who live outside of Montreal may not realize that this city is recognized worldwide as one of the best in snow management. With Montreal announcing yesterday that snow removal operations will take the next 8 days to clear away recent storms, here is a video that provides some details on how that's done. Over 40% of the removed snow ends up in the Saint-Michel Quarry where it might not melt this summer.

With an impending #snowmageddon arriving soon, I decided to visit a local tailwater today. It took a while to catch the first fish, which tore up the hackle on the fly in the process. I felt lazy though and just kept fishing it. To my surprise, the fish liked it torn up, as four more fish took it over the next 20 minutes. On my way back to the car, I noticed some fish rising near the bank (not a common occurrence). I tied on a size 16 Adams and 30 casts later got the rainbow below. #flyfishing

##Snowmageddon update: We are stuck in our house for a few days. Our neighbour with the giant snowthrower had an equipment breakdown yesterday. Might be a few days before he can get it repaired. Trying to decide if I tackle 150 metres of driveway with my little single stage battery snowblower.
Not urgent - we have food, power, internet, and wood for the fireplace. We even have chips.
