A study in Communications Earth & Environment finds that snowmelt runoff in the western US is composed primarily of older groundwater, dating back 5.7 years on average. Spatial observations show that riverbank erosion rates are systematically slower in meanders that erode permafrost compared with those that erode unfrozen terrain.
