A somewhat disappointing article from the BBC about the increasing losses to sickness in the UK. They quote a heavyweight from retail and the article manages to paint a bleak picture that is totally without balance. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c7v80n

New from the Postmodern Set: Freedom — Enchantment: Social Contract

Rousseau’s paradox remains alive: we are born free and everywhere bound.
Freedom isn’t lawlessness—it’s shared constraint, the fragile enchantment that keeps us human.

philosophics.blog/2025/11/05/f

Black-and-white illustration of robed figures standing in a forest clearing, forming a circle by linking chains between their hands. The figures appear both united and restrained, illuminated by a pale, radiant light that suggests dawn or revelation. The mood is solemn yet transcendent, symbolising Rousseau’s paradox that freedom and constraint are inseparable. The image appears as a parody Magic: The Gathering card titled “Freedom,” subtitled “Enchantment — Social Contract,” with a quote from Jean-Jacques Rousseau: “To renounce liberty is to renounce being a man.” The art captures the tension between community, bondage, and liberation.

The New Social Contract Between Generations : Profiguration by Fidel Molina- Luque, 2025

The cornerstone of this book is the innovative concept of profiguration, a term coined by Fidel Molina-Luque to encapsulate the essential agreement and recognition required between generations in contemporary society.

library.oapen.org/handle/20.50

(Three chapters)

#Profiguration emphasises the intrinsic value of interdependence across all age groups, fostering a holistic life experience for the young, adults and the elderly. Rooted in our social nature, especially crucial amid the current crisis, profiguration becomes a poignant antidote to loneliness.

The imperative of mutual love and care is heightened, illuminating the path to a fulfilled existence. This book advocates a paradigm shift through the lenses of sociology and social sciences, stressing the urgency of a mindset overhaul. It calls for a new social contract grounded in altruism for both current and future generations, highlighting the importance of love, solidarity and dialogue. Beyond interpersonal dynamics, it underscores the pivotal roles of education, sustainability and environmental stewardship, aspiring to shape a more promising present and future within a conscientious societal framework. Tailored to engage scholars, professionals and students alike, its accessible concepts are easily comprehensible and applicable across the following fields: sociology, anthropology, social work, education, law and business administration and health studies (medicine, nursing, physiotherapy), among others.

• In terms inherited from Marxism, what is the value of a description of the bourgeois class without an analysis of capitalism?

• In terms inherited from materialist feminism, what is the value of a description of masculinity without an analysis of patriarchy?

• Charles W. Mills asserts that white supremacy shapes the objective interests of the white group, uniting it. In particular, white supremacy counterbalances the class antagonisms that run through the white group.

The social contract of equals is propped up by (at least) 4 social contracts of exploitation.

A diagram showing two green and blue game pieces with arrows indicating they can switch positions, above a pink banner reading "Liberal-Capital Social Contract of Equals." Below, four colored boxes labeled Class, Sexual, Racial, and Ecological Contract connect to a pink section marked "Parasitic extraction."
Caption:
This conceptual diagram illustrates how liberal democratic systems present an appearance of equality through interchangeable political participation, while simultaneously enabling systematic extraction through four foundational contracts. The visual metaphor shows how surface-level political equality masks deeper structural inequalities based on class, gender, race, and ecological relationships that operate through non-reciprocal power dynamics.

’Twixt kings and tyrants there’s this difference known:
Kings seek their subjects’ good; tyrants their own.

Among the essential features of this situation is that no one knows his place in society, his class position or social status, nor does any one know his fortune in the distribution of natural assets and abilities, his intelligence, strength, and the like. I shall even assume that the parties do not know their conceptions of the good or their special psychological propensities. The principles of justice are chosen behind a veil of ignorance.

Techno-Feudalism and the Rise of AGI: A Future Without Economic Rights?
The rise of Artificial General Intelligence #AGI marks an existential rupture in economic and political order, dissolving the historic boundaries between labor and capital. Unlike past technological advancements, AGI is both a worker and an owner, producing economic value while concentrating power in those who control its infrastructure. Left unchecked, this shift risks exacerbating inequality, eroding democratic agency, and entrenching techno-feudalism. The classical Social Contract-rooted in human labor as the foundation of economic participation-must be renegotiated to prevent mass disenfranchisement. arxiv.org/abs/2503.14283 #ArtificialIntelligence #Labor #Jobd #work #SocialContract #economics #economy

Basing people's social security and retirement funds on how much they can cajole some fascist corporation into paying them during their working life is not a just or a sustainable plan.

We need a return to defined benefit retirement and/or UBI for every person earning less than $100k a year.

“The gig economy is zero rights and zero protection,” says Shaf Hussain, a food delivery courier in London.

“Gigification”: The Future of Work?
Ben Wray, originally published by Green European Journal
June 25, 2025

What the social contract will look like in the future will to a large degree be determined by what happens to the gig workers who are at the forefront of technological change today.

Teaser image credit: A gig worker transporting Deliveroo food. By shopblocks – https://www.flickr.com/photos/155237687@N06/34720130102/, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=89964934

"...workers who have spent any length of time in the gig economy know that they don’t have real autonomy. Everything about their work is micro-managed, not by a supervisor, but by an algorithm that collects enormous amounts of data on workers and uses that data to maximise efficiency: to serve customers as fast as possible while keeping labour costs as low as possible. Hussain, a trade union leader, knows this only too well, which is why he specifies that he doesn’t have a “human” boss rather than a boss per se.

This tension between what gig workers want and the reality of their working lives is at the heart of a major debate in Europe today, with significant implications for the future of work. Are workers who are algorithmically managed by global corporations like Uber and work “on-demand” – paid per task, rather than per hour – independent contractors, or are they just employees with an algorithmic, rather than a human, boss?"

Humans will be replaced when AI learns to ask questions.

Humanity's biggest achievement isn't the ability to find answers. Humanity's biggest achievement is the ability to ask the right questions.

A quotation from Joseph Joubert

Men are born unequal. The great benefit of society is to diminish this inequality as much as is possible, by procuring for all, security, property, education, and assistance.

[Les hommes naissent inégaux. Le grand bienfait de la société est de diminuer cette inégalité autant qu’il est possible, en procurant à tous la sûreté, la propriété nécessaire, l’éducation et les secours.]
