In contrast, the internet's commercial products are trapping us, worse than ever in living memory, within a state of tribalistic insularity (Elon Musk and Donald Trump setting fires to the place is also a problem).
Why has the acceleration of the spread of ideas been so profoundly harmful with the internet, but not with the printing press? And not with radio or TV either?
It really seems like algorithm-driven, effortless, large-scale socializing is to blame (including simulated and asymmetric socializing). That wasn't previously a significant facet.
Such socializing appears to validate attitudes and credos that weren't apparently validated before. Unfortunately, most of those are not mature, enlightened, healthy attitudes and credos.
