I wrote a song while driving to the pharmacy tonight. By the time I could get home and open my DAW, I couldn't really remember it, only fragments. I managed to come up with something different but I think ok, a chord progression and a possible vocal melody.
I call it Experiment 5. I am trying to do at least a little bit of songwriting/composition everyday and capture fragments in a DAW. At some point, I can go back and review them and hopefully have material to build into songs.
Another basement session tonight. Good progress on the new tune. Got a decent mix going on. A bit hot on the master, but that’s an easy fix. I may automate the Danelectro baritone guitar track and the Takamine acoustic guitar track so that the volume decreases a couple db in the verses to lift the choruses a but. Never done that before, but seems to make sense. Got the Dano panned about 3/4 left and the Tak 3/4 right. Bass, drums and vocal are up the middle. Got the two EHX MEL9 cello tracks (one pitch shifted down an octave) panned about 60/40. Getting some good separation, without anything too radical. Got an EQ on every track and cleaned up the ugly low-mid mud in the competing low end tracks. Bass I tried to keep a bit of punch without the mud. All the higher frequency tracks, I had to chill some of the offending frequencies. And EQ’ing the vocal seemed to take forever. Got the two harmonica tracks okay now. Virtually no reverb in the song, except a wee bit on the vocal. Holy crap, I respect and appreciate the skills of audio engineers, sound technicians and production professionals. It’s a friggin lot of work and extremely difficult to get a mix to sound consistent on different systems, devices and speakers. It's hard enough getting my meter/emphasis to match in V1 and V2, but in my latest song the rhyme schemes absolutely do not match… and it's like… am I being lazy? Do I need to polish it until it "follows the rules"? Especially since I'm not, ya know, "prolific" enough to break the rules? Or is that just… my thing, and the song is what it is?
I definitely prefer being more loose with my rhymes to FORCING an awkward or lazy rhyme… but… when do I earn permission to just completely freewheel it? Where's the line between structure and playing with the structure and just "might as well have no structure"?

In the basement working on the new song. Got out the ol’ p-bass and finished tracking. Slow mellow tune, so it’s mainly nice easy long sustained notes without any runs. Listened to my harmonica track from last night. A bit thin, so made a duplicate track and pitch shifted it down an octave. Sounds good now. So there's a specific songwriting phenomenon in which the lead singer doesn't sing so much as talk, and the lyrical/melody/emotion is provided by the lead instrument.
For me the best example I can think of is Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits.
Is there a word from this? Does anybody have any other examples that come to mind?

Down in the chilly basement tonight tracking some harmonica on the new song. Got it done and comped. Bass tomorrow evening, then ready for mixing. Lots of low-mids with baritone guitar, cello and bass. Should be fun to mix. The dreaded 200Hz mud thing. Getting used to cutting that stuff out now. Definitely need a high shelf boost to brighten this tune up a bit. Cut the piercing 2-4kHz harsh shrill down a bit in the harmonica track too. Both are big into the idea of doing daily writing / “morning pages,” though Writing Better Lyrics has a number of exercises to try with a 10 minute timer.
Tomorrow is Thanksgiving here in Canada and I'm going to take a holiday so no Monday streams this week. We'll be back with the Tuesday night TikTok, and songwriting on Wednesday morning. I'll sing a song from every year of the 1960s on the Warble, and we'll do our last running around doing substories episode of Yakuza 4 on Friday.
