20mph speed limits save lives. Research from London:
"Child casualties dropped by 46%, and children killed by 75%"
20mph = Fewer maimed and dead children.
Difficult to argue with that.

Proactive road safety improvements before school starts?
Nuneaton has a lot of residential development going on, and one of the newest sites is seeing a brand new secondary school being built, set to open its doors for its first cohort of Year Sevens in September this year. All very exciting – except for the nearby main road which remains at its historical 40mph limit. Will the County Council entertain dropping the maximum speed down to 30mph?

Mind yourself out there, drivers.

Addendum:
As if to compound the confusion, the Department has decided to indicate the 60km/h speed limit, not with a sign that says "60km/h" in a red circle, but with a sign that, up to now has meant something quite different. They seem to recognise the confusion created here and have decided that an awareness campaign is necessary.
It's difficult to understand why a simpler, more intuitive sign is not being used here.
It is important to note that these are default speed limits, and in the case of local roads, can be varied by local authorities if deemed appropriate. In fact many urban roads have already been reduced to 30km/h by local authorities.
You can find more detail on the policy underpinning these change here: https://lnkd.in/eHVAHP2y
The new speed limits will need to be supported by increased enforcement but there is no doubt that they will save lives.

There is no change planned to Regional Roads (R101-R941) which will remain at 80km/h, and there is no change to the 120km/h limit on Motorways or to the 100km/h limit on National Primary Roads (N1-N50).
It is planned to bring in two further changes later in 2025 as follows:
- National Secondary Roads (N51-N87) will reduce from a default of 100km/h to 80km/h
- Roads in built up urban areas will reduce from 50km/h to 30km/h.

There has been a lot of confusion and misinformation about speed limit changes taking place in Ireland this Friday which frankly, could have been communicated better.
The only change to speed limits happening this Friday is that Local Roads (those with an L-number) will see a default limit changed from 80km/h to 60km/h.

Personally, I think that part of #Degrowth involves #SlowingDown. Less cars, more pedestrians and bicycles, and if cars are involved, SLOW DOWN!
#Wales - First #20mph year sees 100 fewer killed or badly hurt
David Deans, January 31, 2025
"The first year of a controversial Welsh speed limit saw around 100 fewer people killed or seriously injured on 20 and 30mph roads, ministers have said.
"New casualty data for the first year of the 20mph limit was welcomed by the Welsh government, while the Labour politician who spearheaded the policy said it showed it was 'the most successful road safety intervention in modern times'.
"The figures showed the number of people hurt fell by 28% compared with the same period the year before, with ten fewer dead.
"The number of casualties on 20 to 30mph roads between July and September 2024 was also the lowest for the three month-period since records began in 1979.
"Amid longstanding rows over the speed limit within his own party, former transport minister Lee Waters urged others not to undermine the scheme."

"California Speed Trap Law requires the city to survey the prevailing speeds on classified streets every seven years in order to keep speed limits radar enforceable. The speed limits are set based on the average flow of traffic, within five miles per hour of the 85th percentile speed. According to the memo from the city traffic engineers, the results of the study indicated the posted speed limit must be raised….The logic of the law was hard for the board to understand, as the majority believed speed limits should be based on safety, not how fast people are driving.”

While I wouldn't want to drive one of these, I see them as a useful tool for enforcing the #20mph #speedLimits. #transport #sustainability #ClimateCatastrophe
“UK’s 20mph speed limits ‘are cutting car insurance costs’.” Because fewer children are being killed and seriously injured. But of course it’s the cost of insurance for motorists that’s important. #Traffic #SpeedLimits

Folk on #UK #car / #motoring forums are going apeshit about plans by #Scotland plans to reduce #SpeedLimits for smaller #cars on single-carriageway #roads (but to increase them for #lorries / #HGV to the same limits as #England )
I suspect a lot of these #drivers have got used to treating rural roads as their personal racetrack, and are annoyed that #PoliceScotland may be taking more action against #speeding

According to the new law they must go through consultation a second time, this time with cost/benefit disclosures based on a flakey tool from NZTA.
@Alex_Verbeek ... it's #UsThePeople, too. Majorities are simply not going to vote for a party telling them to stop eating meat, stop flying around the globe, and stop subsidies for the #OilAndGasIndustry so gas at the pump will become more expensive... At least in democracies politicians must win votes to govern.
We are were we are, because this is what the majority of people wanted .. whether it's #Christofascism or #Speedlimits on the Autobahn... Accountability starts with everyone of us! #WeAreIt
I love stories of how little changes can have a big impact; this is one. 😊
#SpeedLimits on some #Amsterdam roads were reduced from 50 to 30 km/h in Dec 2023 but adjustment is slow & #traffic authorities are trying interesting & creative low-impact strategies, including changing the perceived width of the road & adding a new kind of central strip of a pattern of white blocks forming the number 30 (the new speed) & only properly visible from a driver’s point of view.
