This concrete vibrator is protable!

#AliExpress #Spelling #Concrete #Vibrator #Tools #DIY

Cheap concrete vibrator consisting of an electric drive unit much like a power drill that terminates in a black rubber hose which ends in an excentric ballast inside a metal tube that you stick into freshly poured concrete to compact it. The rubber hose has "protable concrete vibrator" written on it. Alternative uses as sex toy are not recommended.

#WritingTips

There are lots of tips for #writers about do this and don't do that, but one thing that is very important is to be aware of homophones.

There and Their are common ones but there are actually a lot more (depending on your accent) than you might first realise.

course/coarse, hanger/hangar, led/lead, etc.

It's so very easy to miss these, even if you know the correct spelling.

Not only that, there are also words of similar spelling that mean very different things. I posted a toot the other day about the words Torturous and Tortuous. But there are also things like Tentative and Attentive.

And stupid spellcheck won't spot any of these!

Stupid spellcheck.

Is there a Firefox add-on that could help me learn proper use of commas?

I think commas are used differently in German and English but I'm always unsure. A little add-on making suggestions would be great.

A Grade 3 student will represent N.L. at the upcoming national spelling bee
Mason Gill, the youngest competitor at the Elks Club Avalon Spelling Bee, spelled his way to victory last week to become Newfoundland and Labrador’s representative at the national spelling bee. Watch the moment, and his amazing reaction, of when he became a c-h-a-m-p-i-o-n.

It’s quite easy to mistakenly write lead (element Pb) instead of led, because they sound the same. I see this all the time. But it never seems to happen that people write read (past tense) instead of red, yet the two situations seem similar.

I guess it has to do with the relative common-ness of led and red, and the fact that we learn red much earlier than led.

@rudy @pluralistic

I made myself just brute-force memorize it after my own mortifying miss.

But nice mnemonic! for those that still need that kind of, er, accommodation ...

@pluralistic

Beloved Tor editor Teresa Nielsen Hayden once wrote about interviewing candidates for publishing jobs. If they could spell "accommodate," they might make good copy editors.

Decades ago, after fumbling it myself, I asked 30 other experts how to spell the word. All my fellow marketing writers plus managers, editors, tech writers, etc., in the corporate communications office where I worked. Only 1 person — a lowly (but beloved) typist — got it right.

I’m curious if the #Elections #Canada website is farmed out to a USA company or they appallingly ignore #Canadian spellings.

Note, as a noun it is spelled “licence” not with an s (which is the verb form). Just look at the licence in your pocket FFS. #government #spelling

I'll go ahead and say it. Predictive typing is as advanced as just throwing spaghetti at a wall and seeing what sticks.

The typo in "hour” is mine. The suggestion to complete the sentence with "horseshoe” is Microsoft Outlook’s.

Even worse, I have "Check spelling as you type” and “Check grammar as you type" both turned on.

Screen shot of one sentence I was composing in Microsoft Outlook.

“I’d like to meet with your for about an horseshoe”

I started mistyping “hour” as “hor”, but Outlook’s predictive typing suggested “horseshoe”.
