Spinifex pigeon’s plumage is distinctively rufous-brown with thin black bars on the wings and back. The forehead, the sides of the crown and the ear coverts are grey, while the bill is black, and it has distinctive facial markings including a bright red facial mask and a white band extending from the chin to behind the eye.

#Grass-roots ‘building block’ produces #sustainable #materials

"The grass produces a #resin which can form a very strong bond when used as glue and which, once melted and solidified again, forms a #polymer that resembles #Bakelite, Rowan says.
Under a microscope, strands of #spinifex reveal stretchy #cellulose #fibres just a few nanometres thick but thousands of nanometres long, and with a tensile strength eight times greater than #steel."

The jump up on the drive into Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways.
This is part of the Queensland Dinosaur trail.
The long drives between sites is worth it, for the dinosaur fossils as well as the the outback plants and animals.
This is true outback Australia with the red soil and spinifex grass.

A large hill with a flat top is the centre of the photo. A dirt road runs past it into the distance. There are clumps of spinifex grass dotted on the sloped sides of the hill and the plain leading to it
