I recently (a few weeks ago) finished putting the latest version of my Dactyl Lynx #keyboard together, using my Snowshoe MX single-switch PCBs, and I'm incredibly happy with the results!

Epomaker Split 65 Review: A Budget Ergonomic Keyboard

Disclaimer

Epomaker sent the Split 65 mechanical keyboard for free to review for my blog. While I am very grateful for the opportunity, I won’t let it sway my opinion. This will be my honest review of the keyboard. Make sure you also check out my latest reviews for the Epomaker Tide Alice and Aula F108. I will also leave my Amazon Affiliate link where I can because it really helps me out.

What’s in the box?

  • Split 65 Mechanical Keyboard
  • 3 Extra Switches
  • Wireless Dongle
  • USB-C to USB-A Cable
  • USB-C to USB-C Cable
  • Key/Switch Puller
  • User Manual

Features

If you are looking for a budget friendly ergonomic keyboard, then the Split 65 might be for you. This beautifully designed 65% keyboard 68 keys and a knob for volume controls. Each key and switch can be easily swapped with the included tool, and each has a soft south facing RGB for a little added flare. The split design and height make it easy to for users to find the most comfortable typing angle. There is also a magnet to keep the two halves together for a cleaner layout when you’re done.

As for performance, the anti ghosting N-Key rollover makes every keystroke count. The QMK/VIA support gives this keyboard tremendous utility. Its 3000 mAh battery gives it a respectable lifespan through its high speed wireless and Bluetooth connections. The even faster wired connection is ready to pick up the slack when it needs to.

Most importantly, the gasket mounted design and the four layers of dampening material gives the keyboard its satisfying typing sound without it becoming obnoxious.

Review

I was a little disappointed by the Split 65’s design of because the keyboard looked a little too simple. I love the color scheme and appreciate the simple clean design, but it didn’t impress me like other Epomaker keyboards have. With time, the opinion did change, especially when I got to enjoy the benefits of a split keyboard.

I have a repetitive stress injury in both hands that require specific ergonomics. The wrong keyboard will cause so much pain that I can’t use my hands. Split keyboards have the solution to my problem, and Epomaker really nails it with the Split 65. My injury never triggered once, and I use my keyboard for an unhealthy amount of time. The amount of slack the connecting wire was more than enough to fit my frame, and the keys are soft to the touch. Most importantly, the keyboard has such a soothing typing sound that it is going to be difficult to go back to a normal keyboard.

As far as performance goes, I didn’t notice any latency or ghosting throughout my workflow or gaming. I do think the battery is a little small, but I guess it has to. I was getting about 6 hours per charge which is more than enough, but I was getting used to one less wire on my desk. The battery would last a lot longer if I turned off the RGB, but it looks so pretty, I didn’t have it in me.

Overall, if you are looking to upgrade your set up or looking for something ergonomic to relieve some of that hand strain, do yourself a favor and get a Split 65. It is a fantastic option for the price, and you can always change the key caps to fit your style.

You can pick up the Split 65 keyboard on the official Epomaker site, or on Amazon through my affiliate link.

Switching to a split keyboard was one of the best decisions I’ve made. My wrists feel great, my posture is better, typing is more comfortable than ever and Ive like 10x my speed. Sometimes small ergonomic changes make a huge difference.

Finished building my new hardwired split mechanical keyboard this weekend! based on my own design, spray painted and powered by a pair of Raspberry Pi Pico W’s. Of course, it’s running my fave firmware ! Sadly doesn’t yet support BLE on the PicoW so it’s not wireless yet, but I’m just counting down the days!

(more details in the image alt text!)

Now that my #ZSAVoyager ergonomic keyboard layout is settling down, I figured I might as well write about the what I’ve done and why:

Switching to Zuoya GMK70 split keyboard. Remapping the braindead default layout was major pain in the ass. So far it feels like an upgrade over Kinesis Freestyle Pro for half the price. Every keyboard should have an encoder, or four.

So.. Split Keyboards..

After a few hours of scratching my head about the diode wiring, my #diy #dactyl #manuform #splitkeyboard is wired up and working!

Now I need to do the other half 😭

The thick enamel wire is horrible to solder to (at least I'm sure there won't be any shorts!) and the config is really confusing to reason about.

But it's all set up with #Vial #QMK so at least I can change the keymap without recompiling/flashing!

Okay so I need to make my own split mechanical keyboard. But I want my keyboard to have dual functions. Both a keyboard and a "micro" PC. After long discussions in Rust Offtopic Matrix room and then Rust Embedded room, I think it's a good idea to use Milk V Duo as the processor for my keyboard. And then add video output(HDMI), speaker/buzzer, microphone and Wifi. A shortcut on the device will switch between micro PC and ordinary keyboard.

An advantage of sophogo sg2002 SoC is that the TRM is fully available in English. This will be useful when I want to enter kernel development later. For now I will just do Linux on it.

A Milk V Duo with 512MB RAM and with Wifi costs only 18 USD.

Can I do left join of people using #emacs and #splitkeyboard? How do you map your modifiers and symbol layers on a smaller keeb? I was almost happy with having a symbols overlay up until I realized that I don't have any practical way to type M-%.

I find the tenting feature on some split keyboards is pretty vital to prevent immediate wrist pain for me

Cheapest options that aren’t cool like the expensive/flashy or diy ones, so no hand-soldering (those can still cost hundreds of dollars):

The Goldtouch semi- has more stable tenting than 90% of split keyboards, and cost less than $100 used

Or the Targus Foldable on an eyeglasses case will let you test the split ergo water for $30

Old Goldtouch portable semi-split keyboard. Joined by a ball-joint at the peak near the 6-7 keys. The locking joint allows it to be moved and tented at any position and angle up to 30° as long as the boards don’t get too far apart. Targus foldable ergonomic keyboard. Extremely thin board opens like a book and here is opened over a glasses case so it forms a tent with each half of the keyboard on either side.

are split keyboards worth the hype? what’s your experience with them vs regular mechanical keyboards + switching between a standard laptop keyboard when out and about to the split keyboard at home?

i don’t have plans to get one now, largely because of how difficult they are to find and the consequent higher costs… the ZSA Moonlander is what i’ve been eyeing for a while, but i’m curious to hear what people think

After years of interest in split ergonomic keyboards, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a MoErgo Glove80! Really excited about its ergonomic design, especially the concave key wells and thumb clusters. Hope it arrives soon! 🤩

I've got to say, Boardsource.xyz has done right by me.

I have my beloved lily58 back up and running thanks to a replacement pcb/micro-controller. Many thanks to all who gave me troubleshooting pointers. I think it was a defective micro-controller all along.

My digits are confused but happy to be back to column staggered!

I have official permission to teaser this:

strayer has been working on an update for the Taira split keyboard, and if the final test stage is successful, I‘m confident the release is imminent!

Bigger batteries, a nice!view for low power consumption visual feedback - and some 3d printables are in the making, too.

Can’t wait to get this soldered and running!
