Slightly delayed due to my holidays, but excited to share this new paper that came out online a little while ago in ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces: doi.org/10.1021/acsami.4c08428 In it, PhD student Pushpa Rampratap spearheaded our effort to use MAS to study ECM-like . In a prior publication (doi.org/10.1016/j.carbpol.2023) she described methods for preparing 13C enriched version of the polysaccharide hyaluronic acid….

Among many other topics, you can find discussion of how is particularly useful to understand the surface features of protein aggregates (their fuzzy coat), which are often hard to see by cryo-EM and other techniques. (2/2)

Our latest (review) article is now available online: doi.org/10.1042/BST20230731 in the journal Biochemical Transactions. In this invited article “Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance in the structural study of polyglutamine aggregation”, I have reviewed the contributions that solid-state has made to our understanding of the mutant protein aggregates in and related disorders. Busy week coming - but am definitely looking forward to next week visiting (UK) to discuss and more. Actually my first visit there, although I spent quite a few years in the 'other' Cambridge (MASS/USA). :-)

Don’t miss the parallel session 10 on Structural Biology and Protein Design at 10:20am - see the talk by my PhD student Raffaella Parlato! She will talk about our work with Wiktor Szymanski’s team (also University of ) - enabling control over formation & structure.

… using in-depth simulation to integrate various experimental constraint provides an unprecedented view of the structure of the misfolded protein aggregates, with a central role (of course) for new and existing data. These protein fibrils are tough for due to structural and dynamic heterogeneity.

Cool new paper from Joern Schmedt auf der Guenne and coworkers, in the journal : “High resolution solid-state on the desktop”, presenting a conical MAS rotor design for use in permanent magnets. Looks cool! The team includes Oliver Pecher and Marco Braun from the NMR-service company, which is doing various other interesting things when it comes to hardware! sciencedirect.com/science/arti

Well, just got back from the FASEB protein aggregation conference in Ireland. As usual, it was a great event with a never-ending stream of cool science. Quite a few structures discusses, based on and . I briefly talked about our own integrative structural biology work on the fibrils made by mutant huntingtin fragments , as well as our work with aggregation inhibitors (and how they reveal features of the aggregation mechanism)

New collaborative article now available online: "A Universal Nanogel‐Based Coating Approach for Medical Implant Materials" in the journal Advanced NanoBiomed Research. With the group of Patrick van Rijn and others. See: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10 We contributed some analysis of the nanogel to probe its composition and modification.

A new preprint from the lab (together with Marthe Walvoort's group) is now on : biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20 This manuscript presents nice work by Pushpa Rampratap, who did a great job figuring out how to make 13C-enriched hyaluronic acid for use in . More forthcoming on the applications, but this paper introduces the protocols for producing the high-molecular weight HA. Enjoy! (Feedback welcome!)
