I guess most academic #geo peeps use #GoogleEarthEngine or just download the data files directly? Is STAC only really used by commercial #satellite "bros"?

@hareldan I'm not sure #STAC (SpatioTemporal Asset Catalogs; https://stacspec.org) support for OSM editors would be worth the effort: Is there enough STAC-indexed imagery (or other STAC-indexed data) useful for mapping that is licensed such that using it for OSM mapping (and re-licensing the result under #ODbL with just "central" attribution on the OSM wiki rather than attribution embedded in the thusly created or modified parts of the OSM data and any derived DBs & works) is allowed?

People don't realize just how utterly large scale China's investment in renewables is. This huge 10 sqkm complex didn't exist 2 years ago.

Unfortunately, #OpenStreetMap reliance on VHR imagery from vendors such as Mapbox & Esri means it's impossible to map it because there's no control over image recency.

This is a Sentinel-2 image from 3 days ago, and it's about time this free and open imagery source is enabled for OSM mapping purposes.

There is a lot of public geospatial data provided as opendata which is not readily available via API.
I am wondering if there is anything like a public European data infrastructure which allows to host such data in a modern, standardized way to make it easily accessible for everyone at scale (cloud native data formats, STAC catalog, ...)?

Especially I am thinking about lidar data and derived products (DSM, DTM) and a solution similar to opentopography.org.

I'm getting "rasterioIOerror (...) not recognized as a supported file format" when reading images from the #usgs #stac catalogue, collection landsat-c2l2-sr

Any idea what's going on? Do I need to authenticate first?

Spent the morning playing with pystac-client and Dask. It's interesting for small areas but I still need to figure out how to scale it when working with huge extents.
