A standing stone on a dry tussocky landscape. An old ruined building up in the mountains, it said no when I asked if I could go inside so I stayed out here and took my little pics. Beautiful dry stone wall, rusting corrugated iron roof peeling off and dry tussocky hills.Me (right) and my sis posing in front of gortagas stone, a precarious balancing stone left by melting glaciers, in the shape of a mushroom. Blue skies and sunshine, we're delighted with ourselves for finding it.A photo of a standing stone in the foreground and a ruined cottage in the background, up a tussocky mountaintop.

The Duirinish Stone was NOT erected thousands of years ago. Set in a concrete base, it stands approximately 5m high and was erected by hand. That is to say it was pulled up the hill and set in place by human power. See the ALT for more information…

“The stone is a commanding viewpoint for Dunvegan village and miles around, but it is not a prehistoric monument. Instead, it was erected on midsummer's day 2000 by the villagers of Dunvegan, using only hand power and ropes. As the stone is fifteen feet high and weighs five tons, this was an impressive feat, and presumably used the same techniques as would have been used to build stone circles thousands of years ago.” I am pleased to be able to go up there every week for the view and the celebration.

A little bit of a mystery for #StandingStoneSunday

We had a sunny visit to see John Bell's Stone in the grounds of Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire today. A tall standing stone said to be erected as a memorial in 1617. But is that just when the top was added to a prehistoric standing stone? Balgorkar stone circle is just 650m away and this stone really would not be out of place as a flanker there.

#StandingStone

Tall standing stone in a field with a wooded fence surrounding it. The stone has a smaller stone added to the top. There was a ball stone on top of that but now long gone.

Morning folks, to celebrate losing an hour of my #StandingStoneSunday, here's Standard Street or Great Oak Road standing stone, near the lovely town of Crickhowell in South Wales. Standing over 6 feet tall, it's marked by the OS as a boundary stone but must surely be Bronze Age.

This visit April 2012.

#Wales #StandingStone #Crickhowell

An upright slab of stone, over 6 feet tall, standing in a grass field with trees on either side. The setting is elevated over a valley, and the houses and church spire of small town can be seen in the valley below. Wooded hills rise beyond that. It's a bit grey and overcast.

Clip Studio, 2019. This was a composition from my imagination, utilising some textural brushes for the background foliage. I like the concept of brush splats for areas where you just need an impression of some leaves - something I had been trying to recreate in digital for a while before this painting.

A digital painting of a small standing stone in a grassy forest clearing. Strong, warm light strikes through from the back of the picture, in contrast to the dark, rich greens of the surrounding foliage.

Oldies this morning time... A stained glass window from Tintagel taken sometime last century and a rock in County Cork, Ireland (Ciorcal Cloch an Droma Bhig), also from last century. As a Welshman I feel St. George should get in the sea and let the dragons be!
#Photography #FenestraFriday #StainedGlassWindow #B&W #StandingStone

Stained glass window from St. Materiana's Church, Tintagel. It has three panels, with the left panel depicting Cornwall Coat of Arms (15 gold coins) with an angel reading a scroll below. The right hand panel has an unknown ( to me) crest with a crossed key and sword, with an angel below reading a scroll. The centre panel features St. George in armour holding a lance with his Pennon flying (red cross on white background). He is stood over a dragon, and the bottom of the panel contains another crest flanked by a horse and a deer (possibly).A black and white image of one of the two portal stones that form the Ciorcal Cloch an Droma Bhig (Dromberg Stone Circle). The sun is shining and the stones are casting a shadow, left to right. The stone is largely rectangular but the top has been shaped into a scalene triangle with left hand side being steeper and shorter than the right. The natural weathered face of the stone looks almost tree like in B&W with the light and contrast.

My #StandingStoneSunday has got a hole in it.

Men-An-Tol from many moons ago.

Men-An-Tol standing stones. The main one has a hole in it. Like a very big polo stuck in the ground.

It's not only #SilentSunday, but #StandingStoneSunday, too! Happy to oblige. This is part of the #Teufelsmauer ("Devil's Wall") in the #Harz mountains, made of hard sandstones.

We went there for a #hike a week ago.

Carreg y Big near Llynau Cregennan, between Cader Idris and the Afon Mawddach for today's #StandingStoneSunday

This area is rich with stones, cairns and hillforts, as well as being an incredibly beautiful landscape.

This visit March 2012. Portrait, may need a click.

A tall and tapering grey-green standing stone, leaning slightly to the right. It resembles a cowled figure. The stone stands in a rugged landscape of rocky hills, with a lake beyond. The day is overcast and cloudy.

Revisiting the memorial stone of the ‘last woman burned as a witch’ in Scotland in film and archival photos. (‘Janet Horne’ probably never existed but her myth persists because there were so many like her whose lives and deaths went unrecorded.)#AshesAndStones #ScottishWitches #Scotland #ScottishHighlands #FolkHorror #FeministHorror #WomenInHorror #SheWill #JanetHorne #ModernAntiquarian #Witch

An antique photograph in grainy black and white of a rural location. A well dressed family of a woman and three children, two boys and a girl all stand in back of a weathered stone in the ground, a small boulder which is now called the 'Janet Horne' memorial stone. Legend has it this spot represents the location where the 'last witch' was killed in Scotland. A long stone building and piles of lumber are in the background.

#StandingStoneSunday

La menhir de la Thiemblais, an impressively carved and decorated 8 metre long granite standing stone, which lies at a precarious 45 degree angle, and located east of St-Samson-sur-Rance, near Dinan in the Côtes-d'Armor département in northern Brittany.

There are a number of legends attached to this stone, one of which is that it’s one of three menhirs blocking the entrance to hell…

A huge (8 metre long) granite standing stone, leaning to the right at a rather precarious 45 degree angle. Faint carvings and decoration can be seen on the surface of the menhir. The stone is in a small clearing, and behind it are trees in leaf.
