Today the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies celebrates its 85th birthday - founded in 1940 during, and in part because of, WW2 it reminds us that the pursuit of knowledge, science and scholarship is important and worthy of support even in the darkest of times. A message that sadly needs repetition today.

I can safely say Amanda speaks for most of us involved in research. The recent EOs are crippling U.S. research communities - we must act now! #AmandaFinn #USPol #StandUpForScience #AcademicFreedom #ResearchSky #AcademicSky

As a classicist, I think there's a lot we can learn from ancient cultures. But miasma theory has been debunked by science. So why are some politicians, like US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, still wedded to it?

So many people coming forward to speak up for #Science
Scientists, grant administrators, long retired professors from Pitt Med school, undergraduates and grad students from #Pitt and #CarnegieMellon
Non scientists too
They kept coming up! So awesome. One undergrad (here for summer research) mentioned how hopeful this gathering and speakers made her.

(Won't post their pics/faces here - but it was super encouraging)

No drizzle - nice sunshine this evening at the #MellonInstitute steps here in #Pittsburgh for the #StandUpForScience Vigil
We have a poster board with names of cancelled grants at #CarnegieMellon and #Pitt and paper for people to write down why they do, or how they've been affected by cuts to #Science or why it's important to them
Lots of sidewalk chalk messages from people too.
Continuous trickle of people coming up to speak for few minutes.

The image is a collage of four photographs depicting a protest or demonstration in front of a large building with classical architecture, characterized by tall columns. The top left photo shows a person writing on the ground with blue chalk, spelling out "NSF BUILDS SCIENTISTS." In the top right photo, a group of people is gathered on the steps of the building, some holding signs, with a rainbow flag visible among them. The bottom left photo shows more people sitting on the steps, some holding signs, with the same chalk message on the ground. The bottom right photo captures a larger group of people in the street, with some sitting and others standing, holding signs, and a dog is visible among the crowd. The overall atmosphere suggests a peaceful demonstration with a focus on science and inclusivity. The image shows a close-up of a concrete surface with the words "NIH SAVES LIVES" written in blue chalk. The letters are large and clearly legible, with the word "NIH" positioned above "SAVES LIVES." The chalk writing is slightly uneven, indicating it was done by hand. The concrete surface has a rough texture, and there are shadows cast on it, suggesting the presence of people nearby. The shadows are visible in the upper part of the image, with the feet of individuals wearing sandals and pants partially visible. The sunlight creates a contrast between the light and dark areas on the ground, highlighting the chalk writing. The image is a collage of four photographs depicting a grand building with large columns and wide stone steps. The building has a classical architectural style, with tall, white columns supporting a dark facade. The steps are made of stone and are wide, leading up to the entrance of the building.

In the top left photo, a person is sitting on the steps, wearing a white shirt and shorts, with a tree and a modern building visible in the background. The top right photo shows the same steps without the person, with the architectural details of the columns and the steps that have chalk on the vertical portion

The bottom left photo features the steps with the word "KNOW" chalked in blue on the steps, while the bottom right photo shows the steps with the word "MORE" in white. The image depicts an outdoor event, a public gathering, taking place in front of a large building with classical architecture, featuring tall columns. In the foreground, there is a large white board with text and colorful sticky notes attached to it. The board is divided into sections, each containing text and notes on cancelled grants

To the left, a person is hunched over the table, writing on a piece of paper, with markers and sticky notes scattered on the table. To the right, another individual stands, facing the board, possibly reading or contemplating the information displayed. The table is equipped with various writing tools, including markers and sticky notes
In the background, a person stands on the steps of the building, holding a microphone, addressing the audience.

Crowd estimate is 10K for the downtown #Pittsburgh #NoKings Protest (see 👆🏽). Nice!

There are still two others later today - near Mellon Park and one in the South Hills, Mt Lebo area.

There's also the Vigil at my work building this evening. Off to that in a bit

Employees of the NIH have signed on to the Bethesda Declaration, in protest of the authoritarian cuts to science funding. You can sign on in support of them here (including anonymously): standupforscience.net/bethesda

Dr. Lucky Tran ( @luckytran )
posted a moving video where Jenna Norton (NIDDK Program Officer and one of the NIH signers of the Bethesda Declaration) explains more about why she signed.

Worth watching!

I made an attempt at writing up a transcript, I will try to post it as replies to this thread later.

Now that what we swore we'd never hear has been said, the world becomes much more understandable. Listen to this song, do you understand it?
