<p>The Phoenix Cluster is one of the most massive galaxy clusters known. Astronomers have identified 42 member galaxies so far, yet there could be as many as 1,000 in the cluster. Because of its size and its age, it should be finished with the vigorous star formation characteristic of young galaxies.</p>

<p>Star formation needs cold, dense gas. Hot gas resists collapsing into stellar cores, which become protostars and then main sequence stars. Old galaxies and clusters have either used up their cold gas or had it stripped away. These are called ‘quenched’ galaxies. In terms of star formation, galaxies can be classified as red sequence, meaning old and quenched, or blue cloud, meaning there’s more active star formation. </p>

<p>The Phoenix Cluster’s central galaxy is about 5.8 billion light-years away and should be mostly done with star formation. Many galaxy clusters have a region of hot gas in the intracluster medium (ICM). In a typical galaxy, this gas cools down and feeds star formation. However, observations show that the rate of star formation in these galaxies is remarkably low, and there’s no evidence of the cold gas. Astronomers call this discrepancy the “cooling flow problem,” and it leads to this question: Why isn’t the ICM cooling and forming new stars?</p>

a color outdoor photograph. a train or subway streaks along a city street in the evening. this is a long exposure photograph, so the details of the passing train are blurred away. streetlights have the appearance of 14-point stars. there are no people or animals in this photograph.

San Francisco has a nice mid-range fine-art print shop called Photoworks (in the Castro District) that makes excellent photographic enlargements.

Up until yesterday, I'd have described them as "high-end," but that was before I found this print shop in Alexandria, VA. I'm moving into a new place, blank walls to decorate, so I sent them three of my favorite files and asked for a quote.

TIL: They don't want my business. My photos don't qualify as "fine art," not by their lights.

Oh, well. 😲

This is one of my favorites: the lighthouse near Bajamar, Tenerife, Spain. El Faro de la Punta del Hidalgo. I rented a room near this lighthouse in Dec 2023 specifically to photograph it. For this shot, I spent 30 minutes late on Christmas Eve taking test shots before I dialed in the right exposure settings.

#Pentax K-S2 with smc DA 21mm F3.2 Limited. ƒ/7/1, 30 FREAKING SECONDS @ ISO 400. CPL used as an ND filter to stretch out exposure time.

All the effort and patience in the world do not, by themselves, confer "art" on a bad photograph. The magic still has to happen.

By my lights, it's a nifty shot. Maybe good old Photoworks back in SF would agree to print it for me?
