Chr.) im British Museum in #London, Wallfahrtsort für uns Übersetzer*innen. 😋 Die #Stele wurde im Nildelta bei der Stadt Raschid (Rosetta) gefunden und zeigt langweiliges Blabla in drei verschiedenen Sprachen – Hieroglyphen, Demotisch und Altgriechisch –, sodass man mit ihrer Hilfe endlich viele ägyptische #Hieroglyphen entziffern konnte. // The #RosettaStone (196 BC(E)) at the #BritishMuseum in London is something of a pilgrimage for us translators. 😋 The stele was found in the Nile Delta near the town of Rashid (Rosetta) and is inscribed with some terribly boring blah blah in three different languages – hieroglyphs, Demotic, and Ancient Greek – which famously unlocked the secret of #Egyptian #hieroglyphs.

Eine Stelenfigur

Seit vielen Jahren – seit den alten Griechen und Römern – gibt es Stelenfiguren: Auf einer mehr oder weniger hohen Säule mit eckigem oder rundem Grundriss – einer Stele – steht oder sitzt eine menschliche oder tierische Figur – vielfach eine bildnerische Darstellung einer Gottheit. Bei den alten Ägyptern wurden die Figuren stattdessen teilweise noch in die Stelen eingemeisselt.

Einige moderne Künstler lassen sich von den antiken Motiven leiten und stellen solche Stelen aus Metall, Holz oder Stein her. In einigen Fällen werden die Materialien auch gemischt.

So zum Beispiel bei jener Skulptur am Strassenrand, wo auf einem massiven Steinpfeiler eines ehemaligen Zaunees in ganz und gar aufrechter Position ein stolzer Kater sass. Für eine künstliche Skulptur sehr gut gelungen – wäre der Kater nicht echt und putzmunter gewesen.

Von seinem hohen Ausblick starrte er mich unentwegt an, um sich dann gelangweilt abzudrehen …
