Who's Making Love by Johnnie Taylor, released in 1968 on Stax.

In 1968, Johnnie Taylor’s provocative single, “Who’s Making Love” gave the newly independent Stax Records its first major hit. The song peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped to bolster the label’s profile. The album Who’s Making Love was released months later, and not only featured the title track but also an irresistible collection of bluesy songs penned by Booker T. Jones, Bettye Crutcher, Steve Cropper and the inimitable team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter.

Knock on Wood is the debut album of soul singer/songwriter Eddie Floyd, released in 1967 on Stax Records. The album was recorded between July and December 1966 at Stax Recording Studio. It features his most well-known single, the title track, "Knock on Wood"...

"Knock on Wood" is a 1966 song by Eddie Floyd, written by Floyd and Steve Cropper...Steve Cropper has stated in interviews that there was a lightning storm the night that he and Eddie wrote the song, hence the lyrics 'It's like thunder, lightning, The way you love me is frightening'. The song was based on another song co-written by Cropper, the Wilson Pickett version of "In the Midnight Hour" (1965), having the same chord progression "only played in reverse". - Wikipedia

The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads, simply referred to as Soul Ballads or Sings Soul Ballads, is the second studio album by the American soul singer-songwriter Otis Redding, released in 1965. The album was one of the first issued by Volt Records, a sub-label of Stax Records, and Redding's first on the new label. Like Redding's debut Pain in My Heart (1964), Soul Ballads features both soul classics and originals written by Redding and other Stax Records recording artists. The recording sessions took place at the Stax studios in Memphis. The album features a stereo mix made by engineer Tom Dowd, replacing the early mono mix.

The album features the Booker T. & the M.G.'s, the horn section Memphis Horns and the pianist Isaac Hayes, who possibly first appeared on this album, although this is disputed, as he was not credited on the liner notes.

Otis Redding, The Dock Of The Bay, 1968 on Volt.

This was the first posthumous release after Redding died in 1967, and his seventh studio album. It collected some singles, b-sides, and previously released tracks, including the title track “(Sittin’ On) The Doc of the Bay” which was cowritten by Steve Cropper and Redding. Also has a great version of “Nobody Knows You (When You’re Down And Out.”

The band here includes Booker T. Jones, Isaac Hayes, Steve Cropper, Donald “Duck” Dunn, and Al Jackson Jr. Carla Thomas joins on “Tramp.”

My copy is a 1968 pressing via Electric Fetus in Minneapolis MN – it’s in great shape.

"Dedicated: A Salute to the 5 Royales" by Steve Cropper released this day in 2011.

Steve Cropper has said in numerous interviews that his main influence as a guitarist was Lowman Pauling, chief songwriter, arranger, and axeman of North Carolina's 5 Royales, a '50s-era group that wedded doo wop, jump blues, gospel, and jazz in an R&B style that scored them numerous hits throughout the 1950s.

"I've Been Loving You Too Long" (originally "#IveBeenLovingYou Too Long (To Stop Now)") is a #soulMusic ballad written by #OtisRedding and #JerryButler. Considered by music critics and writers to be one of Redding's finest performances and a soul classic, it is a slow, emotional piece with Redding's pleading vocals backed by producer #SteveCropper's arpeggiated guitar parts and a horn section. Redding recorded the song in 1965.

Sittin' in the mornin' ☀️
I'll be sittin' when the evening comes
Watching the 🚢🛳 roll in
Then I watch 'em roll away again
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin' the 🌊 roll away
I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' ⌚️
I left my 🏡 in Georgia
Headed for the 🌉 Bay
'Cause I've had nothin' to live for
Looks like nothin's gonna come my way
