So I just checked #LibGen and found 93 instances of items I had authored, including two books. As a #scientist, I am happy to have my work out there for people to read, but I’m less sanguine about Zuckerberg and his gang of piratical plunderfucks using my work to build a bigger #stochasticparrot. Truly we are experiencing the worst timeline right now. 😡

I'm only finished with the first chapter --and with going through all of the supplementary material for chapter one that's hyperlinked in the instructor guide, which I think should be mandatory rather than supplementary-- but I'm already convinced that this class (and its supplementary materials) should be a requirement for CS majors at least, if not for engineers and "STEM"-type majors in general.

The Stochastic Parrots paper, in particular, is excellent. Two of that paper's listed authors (Emily Bender @emilymbender, Angelina McMillan-Major) hail from the University of Washington. Not surprising then, I suppose, that the folks behind this class/course/curriculum/website also hail from there: Carl Bergstrom (@ct_bergstrom) and Jevin West (@jevinwest@x.com). Those two are also members of a broader effort from that same university called the Center for an Informed Public (@uwcip).

This image, which purports to be a photograph of George Washington Sears, the famous outdoors writer on the late 19th Century who adopted the name #Nessmuk, appears on a website that to my eye is entirely #AIslop. The site, "Dirt, Fire & Sharp Things", has no identifiers or means of contacting the creator. A Google Image search for images of Sears, and of this image, itself, turns up no other similar images, which leads me to believe the image is also #StochasticParrot #GenerativeSlop.

I had been enjoying the Google Arts & Culture app. A good art slideshow widget, interesting art finds, well worth having. This is the story of how it got uninstalled. Looks like there’s no remote corner not worth stuffing AI into, even if it means putting a frisbee into a Caravaggio. We can only hope this increases shareholder value.
