This is probably super obvious, but if you anticipate a power outage, turn off as many unnecessary services on your phone as possible to conserve battery life. In particular, Location Services/GPS is a giant energy hog. If you are away from your WiFi network, turn that service off too; otherwise your phone will continuously poll for a known network. Same goes for Bluetooth.

PSA: If you are fortunate enough to have emergency backup systems in place for an extended winter power outage, remind your friends & family that they can come to your house (if/when safe to drive) to stay warm or charge devices, etc.
We've done just that. With multiple large home batteries, and a fossil fuel generator (solar doesn't work so well under 15" of snow 😆) and propane heat, we may be a bit chilly - but not frozen!
Do you have an elderly neighbor? Don't forget them! Remember, even gas/oil furnaces require electricity to run.

In the path of the monster winter storm? Thinking you might run your central HVAC on generator or battery power?
Chances are, unless you have a really big generator or inverter, it won't work. Heat pumps must defrost periodically, and that can be 10kW on up to 20kW depending on the system size. That would instantly overload your backup system and shut it down.
You're better off with portable heaters and electric blankets. You can also get indoor rated propane heaters, which could be just enough to stop pipes from freezing, etc. But if you do that, do yourself a favor and install some monoxide alarms as well.

WARNING: Gas furnaces & water heaters need combustion air. If you seal off your fireplace, watch the plastic when the furnace fires. If it pulls inward, your furnace needs the air! My furnace is OFF in this video. It pulls air around a basement garage door, so I can use this for #storm prep
Context: The fireplace damper IS CLOSED. The windspeed is 16 mph and temp outside is 11 f. The sheeting used is thin painter's plastic.
