Extreme closeup black and white photograph of a wide horizontal blade of grass covered in rime ice with an out of focus blade of grass and dark shadows in the background. Rime ice forms when fog and cold weather combine to form tiny water droplets that freeze instantly when they contact surfaces like this textured grass. The ice forms segmented columnar structures that produce a spiky surface. In this case most of the spikes are located on the bottom edge of the grass blade while the remainder of the blade is covered with small nodules of rime ice.

The curved branch is only ~15 ft above the ground & I walked right under this beauty while following a female cardinal (no pics 🙁) along the trail yesterday. Just happened to look back 🤷‍♂️.

Finally got down to the Iowa River to catch the sunrise yesterday.

Never know what I'll find by the time I get down there but the sunrises have been incredible this December & the forecast looked ideal for some color development 👍.

The river is bounded on the far side by a bank covered in dense trees that are silhouetted against the morning sky and on the near side by snow covered yellow grasses and prairie plants. There's a long snow-covered sandbar in the middle of the river. The far side of the sand bar is lined with a row of silhouetted Canada geese.

Winter on the Iowa River.

Zinnias have large blooms that top long, stiff stems with large leaves. The flower opens from the outside and is made up of overlapping layers of petals that radiate from a center filled with florets. This variety of zinnia has orange petals and red and orange-yellow florets. This is an older zinnia flower, so the petals show weathering spots here and there. The older lower outer petals are a deep, almost burnt, orange that transitions to a brighter yellow-orange for the newer petals at the flower's center.

It was a cold -4°F day on the river but I'm always bundled up when I head out. Didn't really notice the cold till I went to drink some water and had a dribble form an icicle on my beard 🧊

Except for the roots the tree is coated in heavy ice and a large mass of icicles hang below it, both formed from the cold temps and the spray from the turbulent water just below. The ice has a slight yellow tint due to the large amount of organic material in the river's waters.
