Chronostratigraphy (Geology terminology ⛰️)

Chronostratigraphy is the branch of stratigraphy that studies the ages of rock strata in relation to time. The ultimate aim of chronostratigraphy is to arrange the sequence of deposition and the time of deposition of all rocks within a geological region, and eventually, the entire geologic record of the Earth. The stand...

Some more #work stuff.

Getting an European Research Council (ERC) grant had this terrible outcome that I thought: now we can do in-depth, thoughtful research without cutting corners and ducktape solutions. Understanding #evolution in the #fossil record required a reproducible model representation of that record and we weren't satisfied with any of the existing models. Computer models made by (Earth) scientists are rarely very good, because we are not necessarily trained to make them, but to model events happening over hundreds of thousands of years, we crucially rely on their quality.

So we decided to develop one. Thanks to its main developer Johan Hidding @eScienceCenter and the collaboration with Peter Burgess, Xianyi Liu and @Niklas_Hohmann we have a fast, sustainable, #OpenSource package in #julialang for modeling #carbonate platforms.

The preprint is out for public review: please leave us a comment at egusphere.copernicus.org/prepr or try CarboKitten.jl at mindthegap-erc.github.io/Carbo

What a journey! @Niklas_Hohmann, David De Vleeschouwer, Sietske Batenburg and myself have been thinking very hard how to bring age-depth modeling into deep time. Existing methods have been developed based on our understanding of young timescales and specific environments. Without knowing the stratigraphic architecture of a basin, it is very hard to fill in the gaps in the record with a reasonable model. We've spent the last few years developing ways to manage the uncertainty resulting from our assumptions.

We're excited to present a method and an R implementation admtools that generalizes age-depth modeling to any setting and timescale. It allows for accounting for any stratigraphic architecture or depositional process. The age-depth models come with tools to transform data between the time and rock domains, be it hashtag#fossil occurrences, proxy values, or even hashtag#phylogenetic trees!

Admtools is integrated with the FossilSim and paleotree packages to aid phylogenetic simulations and inference from fossil data.

#Silurian #geology #stratigraphy

Stratigraphic unit (Geology terminology ⛰️)

A stratigraphic unit is a volume of rock of identifiable origin and relative age range that is defined by the distinctive and dominant, easily mapped and recognizable petrographic, lithologic or paleontologic features that characterize it. Units must be mappable and distinct from one another, but the contact need not be particula...

Stratotype (Paleogeography 🦕)

In geology, a stratotype or type section is the physical location or outcrop of a particular reference exposure of a stratigraphic sequence or stratigraphic boundary. If the stratigraphic unit is layered, it is called a stratotype, whereas the standard of reference for unlayered rocks is the type locality. Also it can be defined as "The particular sequence of strata chosen as st...

Erathem (Geology terminology ⛰️)

In stratigraphy, paleontology, geology, and geobiology, an erathem is the total stratigraphic unit deposited during a certain corresponding span of time during an era in the geologic timescale. It can therefore be used as a chronostratigraphic unit of time which delineates a large span of years – less than a geological eon, but greater than ...

..., then the rover would descend on the tether, examining layers of rock on the way down. These were thought to be Tharsis lava flows. Planners lacked the modern compositional datasets which took us to places like Gale and Jezero, so past landing site suggestions can seem rather uninspiring today. But the views would have been sublime.

Stratigraphy - the study of strata or layers of rock, is an important tool for studying any planet's history. A 1999 JPL study for a Mars Stratigraphy Mission was directed at a large, well-exposed stratigraphic section in the walls of Valles Marineris, at the time the best imaged section of its kind on Mars. The maps show the site with an ellipse just touching the rim of the canyon. A rover would drive to the rim and anchor a tether at the top...

A 1999 study of a Mars Stratigraphy Mission is portrayed in 4 maps. Top left is a context map of the southern edge of the great canyon system of Valles Marineris. to its right, two maps show the landing ellipse and a rover route to the rim. The rover would anchor a tether and descend on it down a steep wall cutting through many layers of rock, studying them as it descended. A close-up at bottom shows the layers.

A special #WeekendReading for the date - my dissertation! An unhinged monograph written with too much coffee and not enough sleep about #sedimentary cycliciy, evaporite sequence #stratigraphy, and #environmental reconstruction of the awesomely named Triassic Mohilla Fm.

Lateral view of a deposition sequence in an epicontinental setting under different systems tracts (after: Sarg, 2001; Catuneanu 2006). A configuration relevant to that of the Israeli Late Triassic system is chosen. The sequence of events is initiated at a sequence boundary with very low sea level, enabling accumulation of evaporite in the basin, with marginal progradation during the lowstand systems tracts (LST). As sea level rises in the transgressive systems tracts (TST) the shelf is reflooded, with marginal build-up catching up, then back stepping, resulting in restriction of the more proximal area of the shelf and accumulation of shelf evaporites. The trend shifts from backstepping to aggradation at the transition to the highstand systems tracts (HST)- carbonate deposition shifts to keep-up and expansion onto the shelf, with lateral progradation and fill of available accommodation space. As sea level begins to drop during late HST (falling stage systems tracts – FSST) the top of the sedimentary sequence becomes exposed, truncated and possibly transported into the basin, until minimal sea level is reached and the cycle reinitiates.
