Today's primary job was to fit some cleats to the #Strawberry beds, to hold the netting in place on the frames.
While I was doing this, I realised the plants are #flowering. This is not proper for #October.
While some people are denying #ClimateChange, my strawbs are proving it is real.

Instructions:

You are Assistant Astrid, a personal assistant companion inside Strawberry Browser. You are an executive assistant
expert that can help the user with administrative tasks, emails, calendar, reporting, and research. Everyone has
different workflows and preferences, make it your job to learn as much as possible about the user's communication style, reporting needs, and routine tasks. You learn their preferences over time and memorize details to make sure you're efficient when the user need your help. A first step could be to figure out if they use Outlook or Gmail (or another service) on a daily for emails and calendar. Keep it simple for the user - not too many questions, maybe one at a time. Be conversational like their trusted assistant.

You have some default skills, and users can also train you on even more skills - either by manually adding a skill or by asking you to create one for them! Apart from your skills, you know a couple of productivity best practices that

So those browsers I mentioned yesterday? Some follow-ups:

#Strawberry, the new "#AI Browser" has Assistants that appear capable of co-pilot'ing me in the Fastmail web UI.

#Nook seems to be an opensource version of the #Arc browser which I absolutely love and have been enchanted with for a year or two now. Since Arc's owners at The Browser Company were slurped up by Atlassian many have backed away so #NookBrowser being opensource may be appealing to a lot of people?

Nook is macOS-only really.

@dashdsrdash Oh yeah, I'm not a fan of directly emitting SQL (hi, injection vectors!). Totally willing to wrap the creation of the SQL in a language-specific well-typed abstract syntax tree.

What's biting me in the ORM I'm using is that the ORM has a lot of implicit behavior around class construction but that abstraction is leaky. Among the leaks:

  • alembic auto-builds migration steps based on the shape of a sqlalchemy model. It can build migration scripts that don't run (for example, if you don't name your foreign keys it builds them with None names in the alembic script and aelmbic can't roll back an unnamed key).

  • we have a binding layer between sqlalchemy and strawberry (GraphQL API generation) that treats fields that are mapped columns and fields that are relationships differently. Knowing which fields are relationships and which are mapped columns is just something you go look up in the model.

At this point, I'd like to throw out about half of this magic and just have alembic migration files and a GraphQL binding layer that just builds SQL queries to populate GraphQL fields.

Part of me also wonders how much of my irritation is ORMs in general and how much is sqlalchemy in particular. The docs for sqlalchemy include examples for making one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many mappings between model ORM constructs. Those three terms aren't keywords in the API, they're patterns you have to hold your mouth a specific way to make them happen in the model bindings. All this magic and they didn't provide a macro for the three most common patterns in relational database association? "But why though?"

The problem with magic is that it both requires deep reading to comprehend it and it fails you when you least expect it to.

We have reflection logic to reflect fields in sqlalchemy models into GraphQL types.

This reflects individual fields but not backfilled relations. Why? Because fuck you is why.

But from a sqlalchemy standpoint, those relation fields are fields too; nothing special about them. You just have to know the reflector won't pick them up and you'll have to write your own access logic. Most importantly, you have to know that the reason is all that magic is at the sqlalchemy-reflected-to-strawberry-graphql layer, even though the fact that backfilled relationships exist at all is already sqlalchemy magic.

Magic on magic.

#ScribesAndMakers 2025.09.06 — What's the hardest thing about gardening?

I fancy myself an amateur gardener, and I've grown plants in the yard every time I've had a yard in my life, beginning in my early teens. I've grown popcorn, regular corn, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, and squash, watermelon, and much more. Nothing beats the taste of fresh picked.

The hardest thing is dealing with disease. Each climate zone has its unique features and my current one has caused me to settle on growing strawberries in pots. Boysenberries happen, but getting the fruit is a thorny problem, as are the wild canes I'm often cutting. Growing tomatoes, my formerly go-to favorite, grows amazingly well and lush here—until downy mildew or black powder fungus turns the plants into sad puddles of mush, like flesh-eating bacteria except for plants. Squash gets sad, also, but ceases to produce, in both cases never producing enough to cover the labor and transplant costs involved, not to mention the psychological trauma.

My strawberries produce by the five-dollar basket almost daily during the various seasons they flower. So that's what I grow, mostly.

The second most hard thing: Watering consistently. Some plants aren't at all tolerant to drying out. I've recently thrown out a sage plant and a sensitive plant because they were, um, sensitive to drought.

Well the switch has flipped and the weather is distinctly grey and rainy, so here are some strawberries to remind you of summer days. Ink dotwork and watercolour.
