Next was building interesting chord progressions. Not typical, and with the progression over 12 bars. Those chords are played on the Fender Chroma, which extensions and decorations are played on a pair of Roland JP-08 polychained (replicating a complete Jupiter 8).

Some parts are sequence gated on an odd 9 over 16.

Nashville tuning uses special strings: the four lower strings (6–3) are tuned an octave higher than usual, while the top two stay the same.

Using regular steel strings for this can add too much tension and risk snapped strings — or worse, damage to the guitar.

Francis Poulenc – Concerto for organ, timpani and strings

Concerto for organ, timpani and strings by Francis Poulenc is not a typical baroque-sounding piece, even though it might sound like it at first. It’s actually a game-changer from the 20th century.

Some context

It was written in 1938. Poulenc (1899-1963) was a French composer, part of that quirky crew Les Six – modern, ironic, anti-Romantic. He usually wrote playful pieces, but for this piece he was on a totally different mood.

Winnaretta Singer

In 1934 Winnaretta Singer asked Poulenc for a light and elegant piece for organ, to be played (by her, too, an amateur player) in her private salon.

Winnaretta had a interesting story:

she was an American-born heiress to the Singer fortune (yes, from the Singer sewing machine family!)
she was the 20th of the 24 children of Isaac Singer
her mother, for some times, was considered the model for the Statue of Liberty, though this claim was later rated false
she openly enjoyed many relationships with women. After a first failed marriage, she married an older, gay amateur composer. This second unconsummated marriage had been happy – full of mutual respect and friendship.
established a salon in Paris in the music room of their mansion on Avenue Henri-Martin. The Polignac salon came to be known as a haven for avant-garde music. Some first performances of Chabrier, d’Indy, Debussy, Fauré, and Ravel took place there.

Ideas can change

The idea of a simple piece for organ was abandoned in favor of a majestic and richly complex score. In fact, Poulenc took four years to complete it, and despite working on other compositions, he was fully committed to creating something truly remarkable.

At that time, Poulenc was going through a personal transformation. The sudden loss of a close friend in a car crash deeply shook him. Searching for meaning, he turned to religion and even made a pilgrimage to Rocamadour. This change had a strong impact on his work, especially on the still unfinished Concerto for Organ.

The Concerto

So instead of a nice little salon piece, he went and wrote this massive, intense, spiritual concerto.

The structure is unusual: a single movement, lasting about 20 minutes, with alternating slow and fast tempo marks.
The opening sections are loud and quite violent, with substantial organ chords, while the following sections are much calmer and softer.

As instrumentation, the Concerto was meant to be performed in a small space, since small halls equipped with an organ were quite common in France at the time, so the need was for a small ensamble.

Poulenc’s Concerto for Organ blends old and new: you can hear echoes of Bach, that suddenly become 20th century harmonies and rhythm twists.

<p>Plain text might seem simple, but no computer text is both plain and simple. Before the adoption of Unicode, there was a great deal more than ASCII, and Unicode hasn’t turned out to be any better. Here I’ll refer not to text, but to <em>strings</em> of characters from which non-styled text is composed.</p>
<h4>Before Unicode</h4>
<p>Original ASCII was only 7-bit, to reduce the cost of its transmission, as that was deemed sufficient to encode all the characters necessary for Roman/Latin alphabets. Those 128 characters, including a NUL of 00, were standardised in 1963, and were soon being specialised for different alphabets and extended for particular purposes. Among those is Mac OS Roman, which includes a full 8-bit character set of 256 and set the standard for Classic Mac OS.</p>
<p>At the same time that ASCII was being standardised, IBM was devising its own 8-bit standard EBCDIC encoding that was popular on its mainframe computers and those of other manufacturers. Fortunately few using early Macs came into contact with it, and its incompatibilities with ASCII.</p>
<p>In 1987 ISO standard 8859 was published in a series of parts, defining 8-bit character sets based on the ASCII original, catering for languages including ISO Latin 1 (in part 1, or ISO 8859-1), Latin/Cyrillic (8859-5), and others. Microsoft diverged to its own standards for Windows, in what’s generally known as Windows-1252 or Code Page 1252, over the period 1985-98.</p>

One of the mellower albums from Alvino Rey -- the amazing 50s pedal steel guitar (or console guitar) player who made some very cool records for Capitol! Although some of Rey's records for the label have the feel of Esquivel's best work, this one's a bit dreamier -- still quite odd, and almost otherworldly, but done with strings by Ralph Carmichael, for a feel that gets at the "lonely" in the title. Rey's still playing well -- oddly and eerily on a few numbers that sound especially nice -- and titles include "Just A Cottage Small", "Love Me Tender", "My Buddy", "Try A Little Tenderness", and "Harbor Lights" - Dusty Groove

Rey was the maternal grandfather of American musicians Win Butler and Will Butler, who were both in the band Arcade Fire.
