Day 8 of the 2024 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Ruddy Darter is the second-commonest of the red species in the UK, very widespread. This one was at the wonderful #RSPB #StrumpshawFen, #Norfolk, in early August. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #invertebrates #ukwildlife #photography

I went to #Norfolk for a couple of days - here are some photos from the RSPB reserves at #StrumpshawFen, #Snettisham and #FramptonMarsh. Fleabane, Bogbean, Perennial Sow Thistle, Musk Thistle. #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

Three flowers like all-yellow daisies with larger centres. One has a hoverfly sat on it.A small white flower with three petals sticks up from the surface of the water in a ditch. Circular flat leaves float on the surface of the water,Two large yellow flowers like shaggy dandelions.Three purple thistle flowers, each on the end of a stem which droops near the top, giving the plant a nodding appearance.

Day 19 of the 2023 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Norfolk Hawker. Also known as Green-eyed Hawker, but don't tell our Norfolk county recorder that! This one at #RSPB #StrumpshawFen in July but they're now quite widespread outside #Norfolk too - they have been quite a conservation success story in recent years. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #wildlife #insects #wildlifephotography #invertebrates

Day 6 of the 2023 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. One of our commonest species, the Blue-tailed Damselfly. This was at #RSPB #StrumpshawFen in #Norfolk in July, but there are probably some at the pond in your local park. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #wildlife #insects #wildlifephotography #invertebrates

A small, needle-shaped insect sits on a blade of grass. Its head and thorax are black and blue, the abdomen is black with two bright blue segments near the tail end. The spots on the wings near the tip, which are dark in most species, are black and white.

Day 5 of the 2023 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Brown Hawker is a very fast-flying species which doesn't settle often so I find it very hard to photograph. Except when a female is laying eggs, as here at the fantastic #RSPB #StrumpshawFen in #Norfolk in July. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #wildlife #insects #wildlifephotography #invertebrates

A large brown dragonfly clings onto a clump of moss on the surface of a ditch, with the tip of her abdomen under the water to lay eggs. She has prominent brown veins in the front part of each wing ans is all brown except for some yellow stripes on the side of her thorax.

I know #WildflowerHour is about flowers not fruits, but I couldn't resist getting a photo of these Bittersweet fruits at #RSPB #StrumpshawFen at the start of the week. Bittersweet is in the same family as the tomato and the resemblance is easy to see (but don't try to eat them!) #Norfolk #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

A cluster of six bright red fruits, shaped like tiny elongated tomatoes. They are hanging down from a stalk which itself is hanging down from a thin stem climbing through a bramble bush.

This Common Darter was almost certainly my last #dragonfly for the year - at #RSPB #StrumpshawFen on Monday morning. She looks to be quite elderly, judging from the colour. She was managing to fly when the sun was out, despite the fairly low temperature. #Norfolk #insects #wildlife #wildlifephotography #odonata
