What ancient Iranian medical treatment worked best? Prayer.

In the 3rd century, scientists from different civilizations gathered in Gundeshapur University (now Iran) to exchange ideas about the 3 kinds of treatment:
• medicine by the knife (surgery).
• medicine by herbs.
• medicine by divine words.
In pre-Islamic Iran, divine words were deemed more effective.

Medicinal herbs were dried, and could be worked into pills, salves, or syrups. These were stored in drug jars. Jars for syrup had a spout.

The fritware jar below was made of clay with added ground glass (frit) to lower the fusion or firing temperature. Tied parchment sealed the top; the lip held the tie in place.

Some jars were quite large (½ meter). This one, from the late 1100s, is relatively small at 19 centimeters. Later drug jars had a label glazed on, along with religious icons believed to affect the healing power of the jar's content.

It is appalling to me how institutionalized certain types of discrimination are. Race and gender are certainly at the top of that list, but this is a post about vision impairment and car-dependency.

I am functionally blind in one eye, and was planning on surgery in 2 months. However, they moved the surgery up to next week leaving me with limited options for transportation to/from the procedure. (It is an outpatient procedure on one eye, and it doesn’t involve general anesthesia.)

During a screening call today, they asked about my transportation plans following surgery. Now, I completely understand a prohibition on driving following such a procedure, and the expectation that one be discharged to a responsible adult. My response was that I would be riding Madison BRT A Line with my partner as responsible accompaniment. As I expected, this didn’t go over well, but the nurse simply asked to confirm that I would be with an accompanying adult.

Of course this wasn’t the end of things, and a follow-up call revealed that the Director of Surgery had been consulted and directed that I must not arrive or depart by transit1 or taxi, even with an accompanying responsible adult. Their justification was a vague reference to my safety and the statement that “we don’t know where the nearest bus stop is.” Unbelievably, the nurse who called me back to deliver the bad news stated that their Director recommended Uber2 if I didn’t have a car available.
