* The truth is, I’ve been carrying N95 masks in my handbag since 2001-09-11, and that has often been supplemented by ANSI Z87 impact resistant safety glasses and pairs of nitrile exam gloves and leather work gloves. These items do not take up much space or add much weight. Every New Yorker who saw the cloud of cement dust from the collapsing World Trade Center towers can understand why and how these items might be useful.

@herdingdata agree. Had a saying years ago that "nobody trained me to handle a chequebook" cos I was a bit shit at managing money when I left home.

Right now, hedging by moving to an out of the way place that has historically been self sufficient. How long that lasts as sea levels rise and we all boil or freeze, I don't know.

I'll always go for local decision making though - hence #ScottishIndependence. The closer the decisions get made to me, the closer they reflect my needs.

Carrot Quinn is one of my favourite contemporary authors. I loved 'The Sunset Route' (I posted about it somewhere further down my page), how visceral and sad it was, and there are similar themes which show up in Quinn's new book, 'Bets'.

Unlike Quinn's other two books, which are memoir, 'Bets' is a fictional story which follows a girl named Bets from her time "abandoned" as a child, escaping a decaying city and infrastructure, and the communities she finds along the journey to find her mother. I believe this was mentioned on a podcast maybe six months ago (probably one of Margaret Killjoy's because that's all I really listen to now), but the idea of a post-apocalyptic story where the protagonist journeys on a bicycle with a small dog is an instant sell.

It's a small book, but packs a lot in: critiques of class and the prison industrial complex, herbalism, community, survivalism, the continuity of indigenous culture while another civilization falls, the decadence and insulated security of the rich, and a cute little dog.

It seems like the only way to acquire a copy is via Amazon, and if you read my last post, you'll know that's problematic, so I contacted Carrot directly, but there's probably a lot to be said about this that I'm not willing to in a short Instagram post. Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

However you get your hands on this, you should read it, and make sure Carrot knows how much you loved it. She shares a lot of herself in her work and it's one reason it's so good.

I've started looking, but so far I haven't found much (I've already read a couple of articles about cultural representations, anticipation novels or TV series + cinema etc., but that's not what I'm looking for). I'm assuming that there's a university researcher who specializes in this field or has looked into it?
