#Suse - seit rund 1997...
Und immer noch IceWM als "Desktop"...🤷♂️
@stefano This was also #xfs. I am aware that when it has problems, it *really* has problems lol. But, I've also used XFS on #rhel and #centos 6 and 7 and #Debian without any issues. You are probably correct that it was #suse.
When I ran Tumbleweed and Leap 15 on an older laptop, I purposely went with ext4 and it was unquestionably a smoother experience.
Just curious, which version of openSUSE did you use?
@stefano openSUSE has come a long way. My first experience with it was SUSE Linux Professional 9.3 back in 2005. Desktop Linux was still in its early stages then and it did alright. A little buggy in some places but otherwise OK. I used its enterprise variants over the years, rather enjoyably.
I used it again briefly on another build in 2013. Just after restoring my data into a freshly installed system, the OS locked up *hard*. After the reboot, everything and I mean *everything* I had just restored to /home/pete was gone. Including the rest of my profile. The directory was empty. I went back to Debian as a daily driver and didn't touch openSUSE for almost a decade.
I decided to try both Tumbleweed and Leap 15 on a spare laptop. Yes, both are stable and have improved over the years. I prefer Leap over Tumbleweed. Unfortunately, due to that one data loss experience I am skeptical of using it (as a daily driver). I hope you have a much better experience with it.
I always know it’s going to happen but this is the day, #YaST is retired :ablobcatbongocry: :ablobcatbongocry: :ablobcatbongocry:
It’s part of the reason why I use #SUSE/#openSUSE
Not sure I will keep using openSUSE or switching to Fedora. After all their differences are not that big these days since all the “big” distros seems favour to use the same stack of things, right?

@BoxyBSD was always for BSD based systems only. I focussed to push the whole BSD community and to encourage people to try BSD based systems (such like #FreeBSD. #NetBSD, #OpenBSD, etc.) but I'm not sure if it might provide more value to the whole #opensource community by also supporting #Linux systems (such like #Debian, #Ubuntu, #RockyLinux, #SuSe and more).
I'm not sure if the #BoxyBSD project still provides a value for the community right, now.
What do you think?
my first #demoscene prize was a #SuSE #Linux distribution, together with a huge manual on how-to-use-it... Useless now, but definitely part of my computing history ^_^
@jedie
Ich möchte das betont haben: einzig fehlt _politischer_Wille_.
Technisch haben wir alles in Europa:
- Hardware: #TuxedoComputers, #Slimbook
- Betriebssysteme: (open) #SUSE, #Univention
- Office: LibreOffice
- Cloud: #Nextcloud, #OpenCloud, #OpenTalk, #OpenExchange,...
(Durch die Jobs würden übrigens Steuern in der EU bezahlt, was einen Teil der Kosten wieder zurück spielen würde; und die würden vmtl auch hier einkaufen, also Mehrwertsteuer usw..

#IBMPower systems support a number of different #Linux distributions including #RHEL, #SUSE, #Ubuntu, #AlmaLinux and #RockyLinux. This blog titled "Rocky Linux on IBM Power Really Rocks" from the team at #TachosHPC discusses their experience with #RockyLinux on #IBM #POWER10 from the #HPC context. https://tachoshpc.com/rocky-linux-on-ibm-power-really-rocks/
Waving goodbye again to #LinuxMint I'm just out of time trying to figure out why both laptops' WebGL is "corduroy-ed." Gotta be running stable now.
So off to #Ubuntu land, which is probably where I should've started. I might pick one laptop to run on #SUSe just for old-time's sake.
Package from #SUSE
Lo and behold, SuSE Linux 6.4 running on the Pentium 133. 🥳
This was surprisingly easy, including the XFree86 configuration (there was no X.Org yet). Looks like I happen to have very compatible hardware.
The distribution feels massive. There is a ton of software on those 6 CDs.
I plan to use this box/setup for the “upcoming” Advent of Code.
Very complete and detailed:
