Little swamphen of the lake
You only give and never take
And one day I would like to see
You take a little reed from me

Take me home, muddy road

Don't we all need the weekend off after a week working hard in dirt?

The determination and stern look on this guy is close to how a lot of people feel after a hard week. Or a hard day's night.

The purple swamphen, pukeko in maori, is a colourful abundancy in New Zealand. With some variations, it is found everywhere near water. It is considered a pest by some farmers since it eats any green seedlings, and it soil water throughs for the farm animal.

Sometimes it even eats other birds’ chicks.

It is a social bird, often living in family groups were the eggs of all the females are laid in one nest. The chicks get raised by the group.

It is also a bit noisy, but the sound of it near lodgings somehow become a homey symbol when spending some time in rural New Zealand.

Photo shows a very colourful bird with large claw-feet covered in thick mud. The swamphen is a typical bird living near wetlands, with a size like a large, domesticated hen with long legs. It got a large red beak with a red front lap on its forehead. The eyes are deep red, as is its feet. The head is deep blue, and the front body is a more ordinary blue colour. Its wings and tail are a mix of purple and shade of blue. The underlaying feather on its back and backend is white. This phot is taken when the bird is walking to the left through a muddy stream with some swampy water puddles in the background. There are some long grass and shrub in green, red and brown around the stream and water. The expression of the animal is one of determined end of week mood.
Australiasian swamphen (Porphyrio melanotus) is not amused.

I suspect this pūkeko (Porphyrio melanotus, aka Australasian swamphen) is rather lost. Our neighbourhood may be a trifle swampy, but the nearest stream is a good ten minutes' walk from here.

A metal and wooden fence meet at right angles, with trees above and sword-leaved plants below. A long-legged bird perches where they meet, gripping with its long red clawed toes. It has a red-orange beak and an iridescent blue black body.
