Der erste Schritt: Kalter Entzug 🚫

Jahrelang war ich im Microsoft-Käfig (Win11, Office365 Familienabo). Bequem, aber fremdbestimmt. Mein Ziel: Echte digitale Souveränität. Also: Kündigung. Alles. Sofort. ✂️

Mein erster Reflex war Ubuntu. Lief gut, fühlte sich "frei" an. Doch die Ernüchterung folgte schnell: Hinter Canonical stecken zu starke US-Einflüsse. Ich wollte keine andere Abhängigkeit, sondern Unabhängigkeit. 🇺🇸❌

Nach tieferer Recherche fiel die Wahl auf openSUSE Tumbleweed. 🦎 Rolling Release, transparent, community-getrieben. Keine US-Cloud-Agenda im Nacken.

Es war ein steiniger Weg, aber ich sage euch: Ich gehe nicht zurück. Die frische Luft schmeckt zu gut.

Oh, OK - spoke too soon, we're back to full-on "Fail" mode: Just did what I said I would, went & fiddled a bit & now #Linux is broken & I don't know if I can be bothered to find out what a "Kernel Panic" is or try to recover from it...

For the record, I wasn't trying anything fancy - apparently that single Windows VST I installed just did something the system doesn't like & it decided the proper punishment was my death as a Linux user.

@ljwrites @jwcph I agree. For the sake of who may read #SwitchToLinux threads I just want to add that it's a more general issue of the #opensource software development and distribution model.
The sentence "the stuff on/with #linux either works from the start like magic, or can require significant effort (and frustration) and not be even granted success in the end" is better framed if one substitutes "linux" with "windows" or "mac os". The main difference is that with opensource we are not paying for any of the development, distribution, maintenance activities of the code base (differently from the other mentioned cases). It's a gift economy. And yet we expect it to work (and it 99% does work!). 1/

To be clear, I am not ready to retract the "fail" status, but fair's fair: Because I had posted on the Reaper forum I didn't want to just go silent & thanks to someone there + some rando tinkering on my own part I now have both audio & MIDI working, as best as I can tell from a brief test at least.

There's still other issues - I shall keep the dual boot on the side & fiddle further occasionally. Like I said, I actually *do* want to #SwitchToLinux at some point...

Please understand that I'm doing this with considerable regret, but I have no choice but to declare my most recent & serious attempt to #SwitchToLinux a failure.

Blame me if you will, but for anyone with my non-trivial computer skills or less, "Just switch to #Linux" is utterly off the table.

I literally had ONE thing that needed to work & it just doesn't. For me. If it was me being unreasonable... but no, it's possible, just not for me. Which is just too random to be acceptable.

Every time I see a new "Microsoft just..." Post I feel all the more justified in having pulled the plug on the entire debacle.

The shit has invaded VS Code, which is *Extremely Unfortunate* but you can somewhat get around that.

This is ostensibly the same plugin for Mac & Linux - spot the difference...

Like I keep saying, just because something is nominally available for Linux, that doesn't mean it works, or even is the same thing 🤔

I did manage to load an amp & an IR on Linux, though, and it does seem like there's something to the reputation this plugin has. Will investigate further, but pro'lly on MacOS.

@optilude Welp, I'm about half-way through installing NAM, which has so far taken me several hours & I don't exactly know where to go next - seems like on top of actually having to build both the plugin & the GUI add-on with Terminal (with no idea what I'm doing) I also have to go find some kind of IR loader, because that isn't included in the plugin... that's going to have to wait, I'm knackered.

Dear Lord, the word "cumbersome" doesn't fucking BEGIN! do describe this 😫😂

#Linux Reaper for idiots, a journey: Look, I'd be happy to make the full switch & leave the idea of running Windows VSTs behind - but especially as a guitarist, the native offering just is NOT there.

Just looking at linuxdaw.org there isn't even a #guitar tag & out of almost 800 plugins just >20 is amps, none of which there's any reason to believe would stack up (heh!) against things like Amplitube or the AU suite in sound or features.

Without a solve for that I just can't #SwitchToLinux.

Usually I just complain here but now I have a real #Linux question: Trying to set up to run a DAW on Linux I'm reading a lot of things like JACK, Pipewire, ALSA et cetera - which is what & how does audio on Linux actually work?

What I would like to find out is, what does the system audio chain look like & which ones of all these... apps? whatever they are are versions of the same things & which are drivers & which are necessary/optional 🤔

Preferrably in n00b speak, please 😁
