On this day in 2009, our favourite author became Sir Terry Pratchett! To mark the occasion, and because a knight ought to have a sword, he had his very own sword forged from Thunderbolt Iron.

Black text and swirly border on a pale yellow background. The text reads "On This Day... Arise, Sir Terry Pratchett!"

There is a photo of Terry Pratchett all in black (as usual), holding his newly-made sword of thunderbolt iron. In the background, a cat looks on suspiciously.

This blade is another good example of a medium-sized Japanese sword: made in the 17th century in the style of the cavalry swords of the 14th century, then shortened by cutting away from the base of the blade, leaving about 81 cm / 32" of cutting edge metmuseum.org/art/collection/s #materialCulture #swords #japan

A good open-access book on how Japanese swords got short after 1550 and the Edo Shogunate forbade longer swords in civil life is pages 119-122 of "Art of the Samurai" by Morihiro Ogawa. There were always a few medium-length and long swords but if we think of the short ones as archetype we can fail to see the others. metmuseum.org/met-publications #japan #samurai #materialCulture #swords

A lot of what we think we know about traditional Japan comes from the Edo period to the early 20th century. Here is a beautiful example of a full-sized war katana with a 35" (89 cm) blade. The Edo shoguns limited the length of sword blades worn in civil life, and the military swords of the 1930s and 1940s kept to the short length. Europeans also had short light versions of their war swords for everyday wear such as smallswords, hangers, and spadroons. #materialCulture #swords #sword

I have goosebumps & I'm not even in the room... 🤯🥰 Arms & Armour conservator Ted Hunter shows Adam an actual, genuine "samurai sword", i.e. katana, blade & it's even more beautiful than all the hype surrounding this item would suggest 😻💛

This is obviously "rich people overdoing it" stuff, which Japanese history apparently has a lot of - but godDAMN if it didn't produce some unbelievable pieces of art & craftsmanship.
