As its name suggests, its larvae live on Field Maple and Sycamore. We have a #Sycamore next door, so I get MANY moth types for whom this is their foodplant.

A wood mimic, it tries to resemble a piece of bark or wood chipping to avoid detection.

Side on shot of a 2cm moth on a wooden table. It faces left. It has a short hair/bristly appearance. It is almost shoe shaped being narrow at the head and then rising along the top line to the back wing which then curves round in a convex arc to the straight bottom edge running along the table back to its head. It resembles a bark chipping. It is primarily a dark woody brown like dark teak. It has a pale, more light oak patch near its front legs. It has silvery white patches near its convex back wing edge. Its top edge has two distinct tufts, one larger mohican like over its head and then a dark, almost black very small tuft halfway along.

An owl nest against an overcast sky, fairly small in frame. A well camouflaged owl is peering over the edge of the nest, its silhouette only made obvious by its prominent ear tufts. The nest is framed naturally by tree trunks, dark brown cottonwood bark and mottled white-grey American sycamore bark. A few branches are just beginning to leaf out.

This tree was planted 31 years ago as a 3-foot bareroot sapling. My son and I used to play catch beside it. Later, I would throw pop flies over the tree. Now, there's no room for playing catch...

Had to stop to photograph these old pollarded #sycamore #trees while out assessing timbers in a farm building yesterday, in rural #Stirlingshire 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This tree species was a favourite for planting around farms and estates in the Improvement Era, because Sycamore grows so fast here in Scotland.

It was usually called the Scottish Plane in 18th/19th century records of planting.

Pollarding was probably done to produce useful pole sized timber but the trees also provided shelter and ornament.
