@nisjasper Huch?

I haven’t read anything written by Tanith Lee and I would like to change that. Is there anybody here that knows her writing well and could tell me what are the best novels to discover her work?

AMETHYST SEA (1985)
Acrylic on Illustration Board - 32” x 20”

Over a span of ten years, I illustrated seven covers for Tanith Lee. 1/3

Amethyst water rolls gently onto the shore where a young woman is seated. She is positioned awkwardly with one knee out and the other leg behind her as she turns to face the audience. Her weight is on her left arm, crossing protectively over a horse skull. Her fingers sink into the wet sand while her other hand rests on the spine of a hardcover book, fanned with block down in the web sand. A bearded man perches on an outcrop of rock behind her, blending with the craggy backdrop. Among the mountains, a tall pyramid reaches to the sky only to be outdone by the half dome of rock next to it. In the hazy distance of the shore, a long-legged spidery creature as tall as the mountains tip toes into view.

NIGHT'S DAUGHTER (1986)
Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 36" x 24"

If I don't take the time to keep notes during the creation of a painting, I often forget the meaning of symbolism in it. 1/4

A raven haired seductress leans against an enormous statue backed by twilight blue sky. One hand rests on her cocked hip while her opposite knee flares out. The drape of her gown, cinched high at two clasps, covers one side of her body entirely, while her other arm posed casually overhead draws up the fabric of her gown to offer a tantalizing glimpse of alabaster skin. Bent at the knee, her leg offers pale contrast through the long slit in the black silk. The line of flesh exposed climbs the bare curve of her hip over midsection and up her torso. Dark eyes glance sideways at the audience in a cool gaze. Her eyelids and lips—the only color on her—are painted royal purple to match the flowers growing at the base of the statue. Barefoot she stands not quite at knee height of the man depicted in weathered stone behind her. The full moon frames his face which cuts off at his cheeks. His beard is braided. He holds in his hands an egg and a cracked urn.

Reprint of the 2009 Wildside Press anthology, Tempting the Gods: The Stories of Tanith Lee, volume one. The ebook and softcover are reasonably priced, and even includes a soundtrack! If you’re new to the spellbinding wonder of Tanith Lee’s writing, this is a great place to start.

Treating me to some Tanith Lee short story collections. I've not read enough of her writing, but hugely enjoyed those books I read. I also very much enjoyed her two Blake's 7 TV episodes. Her writing is so richly imaginative. I'm looking forward to diving into these short story collections. #Books #Bookstodon #Fantasy #TanithLee #Blakes7

“There are authors who stick to what they know, carving out careful niches for themselves. And then there are the ones who obliterate boundaries.

Tanith Lee was in the second camp (…) But with such a vast body of work, where do you begin?”

Ulme kirjastamisest Eestis ehk Rapla graafiline ulmetoodang...

- Keith Laumer «Põrgukoerad» (A Plague of Demons; 1965) – Rapla, Estonian Graphic Center, 1992 (Fantaasia)
- Doris Piserchia «Flugerlane» (The Fluger; 1980) – Rapla, Graafiline Produktsioon, 1992
- Desmond Morris «Jason imedemaal» (Inrock; 1983) – Rapla, Estonian Graphic Center, 1992 (Fantaasia)
- Tanith Lee «Itta, vastu keskööle (East of Midnight; 1977) – Rapla, Graafiline Produktsioon, 1993
- Walter Ernsting «Päev, millal jumalad surid» (Der Tag, an dem die Götter starben; 1975) – Rapla, Graafiline Produktsioon, 1993
- Alistair MacLean «Põrgupisilane» (The Satan Bug; 1962) – Rapla, Graafiline Produktsioon, 1994

Just started this book bc I read a Tumblr post about how Neil Gaiman basically ripped off a bunch of stuff from Tanith Lee…

This particular title wasn’t implicated but it was the only Tanith Lee book on my Libby account.

So far it’s dark, funny, weird, and fairy tale adjacent so I love it.

Even though some concept are close, the Sandman’s story is really different from the one in Tales from the Flat Earth. Legitimate anger about Gaiman’s abuses doesn’t really substantiate a plagiarism assertion in this case.

But if it’s the occasion to emphasize a wonderful book series by a great author who did struggle at the end of her career, it’s great ! I recommend these books wholeheartedly !

Post by Nikki Mayari Lalahon. "Tanith Lee wrote vastly, and won the British Fantasy Award, the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, and the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement in Horror for her books. This is the first book from Tanith Lee's TALES FROM THE FLAT EARTH series. Read this instead of #neilgaiman 's THE SANDMAN. It's a 5 book series still being published post her death. I learned today from another author that he took too many elements for THE SANDMAN from her without crediting her...and while she was struggling with the publishing culture of the 90s, he was building and never gave her credit. Let's give her, her flowers back. penguinrandomhouse.com/series/… --> overview of her series, I am sure you can find them at your library though en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_fr…> wiki article about it goodreads.com/series/55465-tal… --> GoodReads page @bookstodon #reading #ReadingCommunity #mastodon #writingcommunity #tanithlee" The post contains an image with the following description: "Screenshot of Tanith Lee's book cover for Book 1 of her TALES OF THE FLAT EARTH series, highly recommended to read, and where too many of certain elements of Neil Gaiman's THE SANDMAN was "borrowed" without crediting Tanith Lee. @herhandsmyhands Thanks for the info.

As a long reader of Gaiman's work, since the early 1990s, i never heard of that relation between #TanithLee work and The Sandman.

Shame on me.

I will read Tales from the flat Earth.
