Technical manuals (maintenance, user, training, and operations manuals) are increasingly published in electronic format rather than paper because they offer interactivity, convenience, and ease of use. Traditional paper-based technical documentation is no longer the best option for delivering information about complex machinery and systems. This modern digital format is called an Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM). The computer-controlled IETM display device can function interactively in providing procedural guidance, navigational directions, and supplemental information. It can also provide assistance in carrying out logistic-support functions supplemental to maintenance. Studies concluded that the Interactive Electronic Training Manual was significantly superior to the traditional paper-based technical manuals under operationally realistic conditions. It contains all the necessary information required by the technicians in the Maintenance Organisations to service, repair and overhaul the equipment. It also contains circuits, block diagrams and pictorial views to explain various parts of the equipment. Part IV of the Technical Manual shall include identification of all active & passive electronic components by means of layout diagrams. It shall also include identification of mechanical/electrical components of all electrical and mechanical assemblies by means of blowups, photographs, isometric views or line diagrams, taking into consideration the cost.

IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual) is a digital manual that helps users understand and solve problems easily using interactive features. A PDF is also a digital manual, so it can be considered an IETM Level 2, but higher IETM levels are more advanced and user-friendly. Manuals are needed so users can refer to instructions and fix issues without always contacting the OEM or service center. As systems become bigger, the number of manuals also increases (user, operator, maintainer, spares, etc.), and it becomes difficult to refer to multiple hard copies or separate PDFs because they are not linked together. That’s why higher-level IETMs (Level 3 and Level 4) are useful—they work like a database where users can search quickly, jump to the right topic in seconds, and view related information easily.

JSG is an agency that defines standards for every defense deliverable. JSG 0852:2015 is standard to prepare IETM documentation. (If you have heard about JSS 0251, it is the standard defined to design your UHBs or technical manuals. JSS describes the layout of the document. I.e. Front page design, table of content design, header and footer, index, a record of amendment sheet, the structure of the content/document,etc are defined in JSS. Similarly,JSG 0852 is for IETM documentation.) Level 2: (IETM) IETM is having cross-references to one section of PDF to another section cross reference using hyperlinks is Level -2 In Level 3, all your manuals will be converted into to HTML pages and arranged in a linear structure in the form a of Table of content, tree as per the original manual. Sections and sub-sections will be maintained as it is like in the original UHB. Hyperlinks. Next, the Previous buttons, search in page, manuals tab, and drawings tab will be available in Level -3. Level -4 is more advanced than Level -3. All the manuals are converted into a database. IETM viewer is a web application/ software to view this IETM Level -4. Using IETM Viewer software, the database will be accessed and viewed.

If the manual has 10 pages users can refer easily. But any system used by the defence will have multiple manuals and thousands of page counts and many times a user has to cross-refer between manuals, intra-manual and inter-manual to resolve the issue. Referring to 10- 15 hard-copy or even soft-copy books simultaneously will be difficult and time-consuming. Using IETM software, users can solve in a single click and seconds.
