I've been messing around with engraved ceramic tablets to quell my drawing needs for a few years now — the results are not always the best, but boy is it fun 🤣

Original plan for Cover-ups & teardowns was to do a little exhibition just with these little ceramic engravings of the skulls beneath my textiles, but I got into ceramic sculpting also, so they became a smaller portion of it.

Like this here "Unravel", based on my previous years piece also named "Unravel" (how original) , they sometines tend to come out of the kiln a bit warped, uneven and with cracks — but that is part of the learning process and the fun of it. I myself, as eell of my body of works, tend to be a bit wonky in general 😅

But I'll get better at it. I promise 🤞

We've passed the first week of Cover-ups & teardowns in Hämeenlinna and I've heard a lot of good feeback from visitors 🩷

So, let's talk a bit about some new and old pieces in the exhibition.

Fading and Faded were two of my favorite works from last year. I loved the fabric, the volume and sharp softness of them — so making a bare, coarse and stripped down version of them felt a bit uneasy.

Glazed ceramics

They look so small and threatening between their older siblings. Despite being the runt of this litter, the (accidental) spotty coloring and (intentional) uneven glazing of the horns make them seem more threatening.

I need to make more horns in the future...

There's a week left of Cover-ups and teardowns at Joensuu! Boy, time sure flies past real quick, don't it?

You have posisbly met "Moody denim blues" in my previous exhibitions, but what about their little "offspings", "Blues I-IV"?

The "Blues" tablets are what you might've seen me do with ceramics previously: engraved ceramic tablets, given a color wash and glazed — usually depicting skulls (what a surprise, I know).
I used to draw a lot in my early artistic days, but slowly started doing it less (because I didn't get exhibitions or much sales with them) and then I got in to the textile-business. Ceramics and engravings have been a nice venue to re-light my doodling passion 😊

(also, I once saw smaller works being presented like this, on the sides of pedestals, so I totally stole that idea. Can't remember from who though 🙈🙇)

Cover-ups & teardowns is (as far as I know) still at Taidekeskus Ahjo!

The whole main idea behind this exhibition was to pair up my previous textile pieces with newer ceramics experiments that somewhat reflect the shapes of the actual skulls that I've covered up. "Sharp eyes", 2025, embodies this idea quite well.

I made "My Fucking eyes!" and "Not much behind the eyes", 2025, as a pair of textile sculptures, playing with the contrasts of "dark textiles vs reflective surfaces" and "soft vs sharp". "Sharp eyes" was a fun addition for the pair, having very sharp and reflective (even with black clay) features. And I am quite pleased how relatively realistic the skull and horn shapes ended up. Might still need to work on my glaze 🤔

Vernissage: 9.9. 18-20, welcome!

My previous exhibitions have mostly consisted of animal skulls covered with rich textiles, but along with the fabrics in Cover-ups and teardowns-exhibition, I'll attemp to also brings the pure forms of skulls to the fore for the first time with the help of ceramics. 

I'll bring some of my previous textile sculptures to the Kytö/Liekki-space in Taidekeskus Ahjo, where I've created works with colorful and organic-style patterns on top of animal skulls. Among these hanging, bursting and soft forms, newer, harder surfaces peek out — stripped-down ceramic works that remind both the viewers and myself of what is left under the layers.

I've tried to create some pairings with my older textiles works — covered in layers — and new shiny ceramics — stripped down forms of what once was — in hopes of creating a balanced combination.

In the pictures above I've featured "disfavor of he kiln gods" and some work in progress pieces that still need to be fired up in the kiln ❤️‍🔥

Maija Lavonen was one of the pioneers in Finnish light art scene. Originally a textile artist, known from her rugs, she started incorporating fibre optics in her weavings later in her career. With pretty awesome results. Seen at Hiljaisia monumentteja (Quiet Monuments) exhibition in Architecture & Design Museum in Helsinki, still on until September 14th.

Behold: Tentacles! This time made from denim! What will I come up next?! 🤣 Yeah — this guy doesn't have much of an origin story: reaching tentacles were popular last year, I had some old jeans, I made this. I know, very deep.

Fuzzy appendages, 2025

Extrude/Exude has been going along nicely - Thanks to everyone who has visited thus far 😊

Last year I received a pair of deer antlers that still had fuzzy, light brown fur on them. They looked so fun. I would've wanted to present them just as they were, but unfortunately they kept shedding and shedding constantly 🙈 So I was forced to strip and clean them completely. Saddened by this, I had the idea to re-fur them and even give them some extra appendages to fur up.

Boy, those long appendages took ages to stuff by hand 🤣

The exhibition is already a week old, so let's meet some newcomers to my repertoire.

I had fun with last years goopy "Muddle Puddle" and "I seem to have misplaced it" (both also available at Extrude/Exude 👀) so I had puddles of fabric in my mind. Then I found these lovely green fabrics — and bada-bing-bada-boom: "Oh, what a world. What a world".

The name is just a random reference. You know — melting in to a green puddle? Wicked was huge last year, or so I've been told. You get it.

My first post is about MOKA / FAIL exhibition at Galleria 5 in Oulu by the ever lovely MOKA-group.

Mistakes make us blush during the day and keep us awake at night. They haunt both what we’ve done and what we haven’t, create anticipation, embarrassment afterward, and laughter around the corner. Sometimes even a small oversight can feel like a catastrophe. Yet, almost always, a mistake is harmless. It might churn our stomachs, but the world doesn’t shift off its axis.
