If you're interested in this sort of thing (and who wouldn't be?!)

The whole notebook full of late 1950s UK telephone routing codes is online as a pdf here: paulseward.com/downloads/Telep

An OCR version will follow at some point in the handwavy future when I get around to it (if I don't forget).

Christmas at Haywards Heath Telephone exchange 1953

Lots of paper garlands and decorations adorning the CB10 switchboard here, but if you look closely there are paper santas/elves hanging from the cable turning sections where the positions wrap around the corners of the room.

Thanks to Stefan on the "UK Switchboards" facebook group for finding it.

Large telephone switchboard wrapping round at least 2 walls of the room with 11 operators seated at it, 2 operators on an enquiry desk in the foreground and the exchange supervisor standing in the middle of the room.

The switchboard is adorned with paper garlands, articulated paper cutouts of santa and his elves, and concertina paper decorations hanging from the ceiling.

The enquiry desk in the foreground is topped by a large collection of christmas cards.

I love the art style on this poster produced by Post Office Telecomunications in the UK.

These posters would have been at least A2 in size, and were available to schools to help teach students how to use the telephone.

I'm not sure of the date, but I would guess late 60s - early 70s.

This poster, and more can be found here: samhallas.co.uk/repository/doc

Illustration based poster, designed for children entitled "You don't HAVE to be tone-deaf about our telephone tones! Here's how to recognise them:" It has 6 sections:

A cat wearing an operators headset:
Dialling tone - a continuous purring - tells you that the exchange equipment is ready for you to start dialling

An alarm clock with an angry face:
Ringing tone - a repeated double beat - tells you that the called number is being rung

A person with long ginger hair singing into a microphone:
Engaged tone - a repeated single note - usually means the number you are calling is in use, but it can also mean the exchange equipment is busy

A kettle whistling as it boils:
Number unobtainable tone - a continuous high-pitched note - tells you that the number is either out of service or has not been allocated to anyone

A woodpecker sitting on a branch, pecking the treetrunk:
Pay tone - high-pitched rapid pips - means you are being called from a "pay-on-answer" coin box

Composite picture featuring all the characters above standing around a telephone switchboard operator:
Tune in to the Post Office exchange operator if you don't know these tones. She will be pleased to play them for you free of charge

I'm in the process of moving a small #strowger #TelephoneExchange demonstration rack on to its next home.

Before I say goodbye to it, I thought I'd video a short tour...

Looks like a Nokia 3310, which was discontinued in 2005. And the “Ready to Go” product name, introduced by Eircell in 1997, was dropped by @VodafoneIreland sometime in the noughties.

Newsreel coverage of the British Post Office launching their "mobile telephone exchange" in 1939

This was a complete #strowger #TelephoneExchange built into a trailer.

It was designed to provide service if the existing exchange suffered damage (fire, storm, gas explosion etc) or as a temporary measure while an exchange was upgraded or extended.
