Got time measurements working via manual cursors. Problem was in Stop Comparator card. Did a swap for now, but suspect Q54, will do component level troubleshooting next, but for now happy to get this closer to working.
0% zone still not working, which means no voltage measurements, and thus no automatic risetime measurements; that’s next on the list.

Next on the bench, the Tektronix 567 oscilloscope with possibly the first digital readout facility on any oscilloscope.
Swapping a bad tube in the regulator got all the rails up to spec. A few bad Nixie tubes in the readout unit were swapped, and now the real troubleshooting begins.

This was an easy win. Pulse generator initially had a slow rise time. Some disassembly, cleaning and reassembling got it working properly.

9/ very confident that it’s a blanking issue with the plug-in - tried it with another horizontal plug-in just to make sure it wasn’t the mainframe.
A few other interesting features of the 3B5:
The delayed magnification feature. Instead of a separate timebase & intensification zone, it has a selectable 10x & 100x magnification, and the delay control changes the point at which the sweep goes into the magnified rate, so you can still accurately zoom into a specific portion of the waveform. I think this is how some of the later 400 series scopes did it. I like it.
The sweep speed goes up to 10nS / division which is the fastest of any of the 560 series plug-ins. Note while it’s labeled 10nS on the silkscreen, the illuminated indicator uses ‘mili micro seconds (m u S)’ to avoid adding a 3rd prefix.

7/ It was the nuvistor. It’s always the f$&king nuvistor. Both autoranging plug-ins are somewhat working.
Vertical plug-in still has some ranging issues, and the horizontal plug-in is slow to un-blank, which becomes a problem at higher sweep speeds. I’ll tackle that next.

A 1960s oscilloscope with one of its plug-ins on an extender to place it out into a service position. A stable square wave trace is displayed, and the vertical deflection and sweep speeds are displayed via backlit numbers.A sine wave shown at a higher frequency and sweep speed, the left portion of the waveform is faded, likely indicating that the unblanking signal is delayed or has a slow risetime.

APRS Knowledge Quest Phase 4: Fired up SATSAGEN with the ADALM Pluto SDR to look at TX deviation during the APRS burst. All 3 radios look reasonable for deviation (although did see some occasional splatter on the Yaesu VX-8G output). Learned how to use TX deviation measurement on SATSAGEN SW, but did not resolve why radios work poorly in the car (other than there are few digi’s along my typical route). This SW also works RX-only with RTL-SDR sticks. #HamRadio #RadioTest #TestEquipment

Screen grab of transmit deviation max-hold (red line) for the Yaesu VX-8DR. Did not look at this too closely, mostly just to see it was a reasonable fit into the deviation window... (Not too large and not too small.)

It generates a sine wave but it is easy to temporarily alter the circuit to generate more complex waveforms.

A line test generator. With manual and auto sweep (from about 400Hz to about 3.5KHz.

I have used test equipment to make music. With the manual frequency adjust you can make some melodic stuff. And connect that to a guitar pedal, like a guitar synth for example and you can do all kinds of crazy stuff.

This is a music studio equipment appreciation post.

I've been acquiring old 1970s test equipment lately, stuff that was never intended to be used to make music (I blame Hainbach, look him up on YouTube).

I recently got a pulse generator (the unit on the right). Syncing it to the function generator on the left gave me a way to create these gritty, punchy lofi non-standard rhythms. You might call them glitchy.

They sound so good. That's it, that's the post. 🙂

Photo of two pieces of equipment, both made by Wavetek. Both are rectangular with white faces and lots of dials. Also bnc connections for ins and outs. There's a blue cable running from one to the other, and the left one has a black cable plugged into it's output. Other pieces of equipment can be seen above.a screenshot from a music recording program (called a DAW). Seven segments of recorded audio, each unique. Each has upper and lower sections going from left to right, which in audio land is a way to visualize left and right channels of a stereo recording.

Three pieces of old school 1970s laboratory test equipment sitting in my music studio. On the left, one with a large chrome dial is sitting on top of another which has an analog meter to measure voltage or decibels. On the right and closer to you is the third piece, which has lots of dials and switches. A cable is running from it to the unit with the analog meter.
