Texas' state song is "Texas, Our Texas," which originally included this line: "Largest and grandest, Withstanding ev'ry test." After Alaska became a state, they had to change the line to "Boldest and grandest." #alaskahistory #texashistory #alaska

'Giant' (1956): "We really stole Texas, didn't we, Mr. Benedict, I mean, away from Mexico. [...] why it's all right there in the history books isn't it?"

*one of the most important scenes in the film and funny enough I can only find ONE clip of it, on IG, that I of course cant open myself, so I hope this link works properly. (if I had the know how, I'd clip that scene myself, but, here we are...)

Texas State Library and Archives Commission: State Archives Announces Collections Newly Accessible Online. “The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) has announced new and revised finding aids recently made available online, along with fresh uploads to the Texas Digital Archive, its repository of electronic items.” Way too much for me to summarize.

TIL: On June 11, 1865, a group of armed robbers made off with some $17,000 in gold and silver (worth about $270,000 in today's money) of the #Texas state treasury in #Austin during the chaotic aftermath of the US Civil War.

@mekkaokereke
Meanwhile, General López de Santa Anna had seized control of the government in Mexico City with reactionary conservative backing, and was working to make himself dictator.

Some Mexican state and local governments refused to recognize López de Santa Anna's government, with a few going so far as to declare independence. This is something many Hispanic Texas went along with. So temporary alliance with US expat slavers for independence, for different reasons.

@mekkaokereke

In the Panic of 1837, lots of slavers in the US South lost fortunes and went into debt due to crash of investments that were very much like the Subprime mortgage crisis, except they invested in bundles of mortgages on enslaved people rather than houses. So a bunch of the slavers decided to move to Mexican Texas to escape their debts, and illegally bring their slaves with them.

"There are records of people being whipped for celebrating and being threatened for celebrating. And even outside the context of celebrations, there was retaliation against the Freedmen [..] There was a lot of hope in the middle of a lot of hostility."

I wonder what happened to this family.

Family between Dallas and Austin, Texas. The people have left their home and connections in South Texas, and hope to reach the Arkansas Delta for work in the cotton fields. Penniless people. No food and three gallons of gas in the tank. The father is trying to repair a tire. Three children. Father says, "It's tough but life's tough anyway you take it" | Library of Congress

I suppose that at some point I will have to go and look at the Collins collection, although I find militaria buffery, as opposed to serious military history, tiresome. For more background on the Collins collection and the recent politics of Alamo commemoration, read the Texas Monthly piece I have attached as a response to this post.
