One interpretation/prediction by etc is that the only people who can afford to be now has been filtered out by class through unpaid internships and low wages in expensive cities

So you can’t afford to be a journalist unless you are well off enough to do it as a vanity project (so won’t likely have a class consciousness)

Or if you’re so obsessed with the career that you’re not willing to risk your job by rocking the boat
