Matt Berninger – Get Sunk
Matt Berningers Stimme ist für viele längst ein Ort: ein tiefer, melancholischer Raum, irgendwo zwischen Rotwein, Weltschmerz und Witz. Mit Get Sunk, seinem zweiten Soloalbum, zeigt er, dass dieser Raum auch ohne The National funktioniert – wenn auch nicht völlig ohne sie.
Wer sich ein radikales Loslösen von The National erhofft hat, wird schnell merken: Der Abstand zur Band ist gering, aber bewusst gewählt. Statt Trennung gibt es Erweiterung und viel Raum für Reflexion.
Berninger operiert hier auf vertrautem Terrain: tiefer Bariton, viel Hall, elegante Verzweiflung. Natürlich fehlen hier die dynamischen Spannungsbögen, die The National oft so mitreißend machen. Die Songs sind luftiger arrangiert, oft heller, manchmal fast freundlich, zumindest musikalisch.
Inland Ocean eröffnet das Album wie ein vorsichtiges Auftauchen aus tiefer Dunkelheit. Der Song, den Berninger vor Jahren bereits als Einstieg geplant hatte, funktioniert wie eine Einladung: vorsichtig, fließend, fast meditativ.
Bonnet of Pins dagegen bringt etwas Schärfe ins Spiel. Die Gitarren kratzen, der Beat treibt, Julia Laws ergänzt mit feinem Gespür. Ein Song, der live vermutlich gut funktionieren wird und am ehesten von einem Album seiner Hauptband stammen könnte.
Auch No Love zeigt, wie sich Berninger aus bekannten Formen löst: Lo-Fi-Rhythmen treffen auf melancholischen Pop, ein bisschen zerzaust, aber nie beliebig.
Und dann sind da diese Momente, in denen sich das Album fast auflöst. Frozen Oranges etwa – eine Kindheitserinnerung, eingefroren in Klang. Einfach, fast filmisch. Oder Nowhere Special, das klingt wie ein nächtlicher Monolog, ein wenig betrunken, sehr ehrlich.
Immer wieder wird klar: Berninger braucht nicht viel, um Wirkung zu erzeugen. Ein Satz, ein Break, ein feines Arrangement reichen aus, um etwas in Bewegung zu setzen.
Nicht jeder Song überzeugt. Silver Jeep verliert sich ein wenig im eigenen Fluss, Times of Difficulty bleibt eher Atmosphäre als Entwicklung. Doch gerade das macht die Platte ehrlich. Sie wirkt nicht geplant, sondern entstanden.
Get Sunk ist kein großer Wurf, aber ein feiner, stiller Begleiter für späte Stunden. Es ist Musik für jene Momente, in denen man keine Antworten braucht – sondern einfach nur jemanden, der mit einem sitzt und schweigt.

I was very much all-in on The National beginning with Alligator, and up to High Violet.
After that, they made a run of three albums that I couldn’t have been any less interested in. I’ve even revisited those three numerous times, and I still feel the same way about them.
This record was the first time since High Violet that I had any kind of affection for what they were doing. It’s a really good album, as is its sister recording Laugh Track.
The version of The National that gave me songs like “Abel”, “Available” and “Mistaken For Strangers” is long gone.
This (and Laugh Track) is the best that “sleepy dad rock” National has given us.
Besides, any record that makes lyrical references to both Cowboy Junkies and The Afghan Whigs in the same song is ok with me.
