Wessex Tales by Thomas Hardy
I've been dipping into Hardy's short stories. His use of irony and coincidence/Fate (Weird) together with the suggestion of the supernatural or referring to folklore can produce stories fit for Halloween.

You think I’m here to die.

I grow things.
Tomatoes in rusted cans.
Hope in children who don’t know what the word means yet.
I build—walls, stories, mornings.

The former site of the Hardy Tree - the ancient tree was blown down in 2022 and only the roots and graves remain. Famously, as a young architect, Thomas Hardy supervised the removal of graves to make way for new railway lines, gathering the headstones around the tree in St Pancras old Church.
