@VWDasher i have pondered various times over my existence, the contrasting feelings i have for the #Narnia series vs the #LotR series. i respect, admire, & am awed by #Tolkien's world, yet tbh i don't love it. otoh, i truly love #CSLewis' universe. no other book nor series ever made me lie face down on my childhood bed bawling my eyes out that i couldn't get to Narnia... each of the childhood times i read then re-read it. all these many decades later the love has not dimmed, & when 12 or 18 months ago i finally re-read the seven books again for possibly the first time thru my embittered adult eyes, i loved them just as much. that time though, the tears were of a different nature. @giflian

And this is where I feel there's a tremendous rift, a great divorce as it were (q.v. #CSLewis) between what I think J. R. R. Tolkien was trying to put in the pages of The Lord of the Rings, and what the mainstream #fantasy geek fandom thinks Tolkien was all about.
I feel that Tolkien's work borders on cosmic horror, in fact. Is that how the average #Tolkien fan views him? I doubt it, but I suspect that this average Tolkien fan also does not respond to cosmic horror as I do.

One of the quixotically ambitious and stupid projects that I have considered putting effort into, something that would probably take months and run to many dozens of pages, has to do with Prof. #Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, and the Peter Jackson movies that I have made no secret of detesting—my grand attempt to run through both the novels and the movies in exhausting detail, pointing out just why the alterations from book to film are so woeful.
It's my general contention that the films are a travesty, a terrible distortion of the books and their spirit, and additionally that they have exerted a long-term damaging effect on popular entertainment and the public imagination.
Racists really like those Peter Jackson films. Not enough people talk about that, or about how the PJ LOTR films specifically contribute to the Tolkien-flavored technofascist plans of Peter Thiel and that Anduril guy and a lot of other villains of the #technology sector.

"I Kveld blev der banket paa Helvedes Port" trækker mig så over i Grundtvigs forhold til den angelsaksiske litteratur. Der nusser jeg så for min fornøjelses skyld rundt i hans forhold til "Beowulf" og får bekræftet, hvad jeg godt vidste, men delvis havde glemt, at Tolkien kendte Grundtvig godt og lå tæt på ham i forståelsen af "Beowulf".
Måske skriver jeg i virkeligheden om Grundtvig, fordi jeg er rollespiller og fantasylæser.
