We've got a single plant in the garden and it not only fed squirrels for months it's produced lots of fruit for us too.

I just cooked up a batch of salsa verde and it's very tasty. Eager to have it for supper - over some turkey with rice and corn, and some tortillas.

There's lots of blooming and bees going on in the yellow squash, the tomatoes and tomatillo are taller than me, and the cucumber bed has no more beets.

The big leafy 'beets' had a big white root. Not sure what it is, maybe chard?

A photo of crook-neck yellow summer squash blossoms. There are about a dozen or maybe more blossoms that are bright yellow.A photo showing two rows with a mix of tomatoes, tomatillo, basil, and runner beans. The left row is in the ground and the right row is in a raised bed. Some of the far tomatoes on the right, which are Amish paste, are above the trellis and probably 6 feet tall from the bed or 7 feet from the ground. There are some tomatillo that are over 6 ft on the left row. The right row has Scarlet runner beans growing out over the top of the trellis and they have red flowers.A raised bed that just had beets pulled out of it. There are 4 cucumber plants, 2 melon plants, lots of marigolds, some petunies, and other various things growing but the soil of the bed is visible now and needs to be mulched. There are some old hollyhocks on the near end of the bed and it has a trellis from a cattle panel above the bed. There are yellow flowers on the cucumbers, pink hollyhock, pink petunia, and orange marigolds.A photo showing all the foliage and root from some very large beet like plants. The root is white looking but not bulb like. There is a closeup of the root inset in the lower left corner of the photo.

Watermelon, cucumber, tomatillo, and Amish paste tomato update.

There are lots of the sugar baby watermelon that had successful pollination. The first cucumber is growing and the tomatillo have rapidly expanding husks. The Amish paste tomato has set more fruit and they look to be the correct shape unlike the early ones that set.

A photo showing the size of a watermelon on the vine. A small paint brush that is used for pollinating and a couple of finger tips are nearby. The watermelon is light green colored with dark stripes and is about 50mm in size.A single cucumber that looks prickly. It is growing from a plant that's seed was saved from a Muncher cucumber but it could be a hybrid between a Marketer cucumber.A photo showing a tomatillo plant with some pollinated fruit. They are paper balloon looking light green with stripes husks that grow fast to full size then the fruit inside slowly fills it up. There are some large yellow flowers on the plant shown too.A photo showing two Amish paste tomatoes growing on the vine. They are elongated with a somewhat blunt tip. They are in the shade.

The tomato and tomatillo plants.

They're growing fast and everything has tomatoes started except the Amish Paste. One of the tomatillo has grown enough to get started weaving it into the trellis.

A photo showing orange Flamme tomatoes. These plants are in the ground. It's an on-the-vine looking type of tomato. There are about a half dozen tomatoes in this cluster. Some campari tomatoes, which is what I call them. They are saved seeds from the Costco on the vine tomatoes they sell (sometimes) that are called Campari but are actually grown from Mountain Magic seeds which are hybrid, so these are saved seeds from a hybrid. They taste really good and grow good too. They are a red tomato. Two tomatillo plants growing in the ground. The near one is tall enough to reach the trellis, the other isn't quite there yet. Two or more plants are needed for better pollination even though they aren't different types, it's just how they work apparently.A lengthwise view of a 14x4 foot raised bed. The center on the trellis has tomato plants and on each side are basil plants. The nearest tomatoes are campari, then San Marzano, and at the far end are Amish Paste.

I'm still a week or more out from planting anything. I might have to up-pot some plants into gallon pots. I trimmed the basil and put some of that in water to root. Jalapenos are looking funky, might just be bad genetic plants, I don't need any hot peppers and these are extremely hot jalapenos and not the mild kind they were suppose to be. Sweet peppers look good. No tomato problems except lack of space.

A photo of the bench that has 3 trays of plants. The far tray is 18 pots of various basil plants that have been harvested and pruned back. The middle tray is some tomatillo plants, the near tray on the right is tomatillo, and tomato plants. The bench has foil covered curtains on all sides.A photo showing 4 plant trays with peppers and tomatoes inside a grow tent. The near left tray is hot jalapeno and red marconi sweet pepper plants, the middle tray is various tomatoes, the right tray is red marconi and California Wonder sweet pepper plants. The one tray in the back has various tomatoes. The far right corner has a 1 year old Red Marconi sweet pepper plant that has blossoms and fruit on it and is in a 2 gallon or so round pot.

Tomato progress. So far nice stocky tomatoes since I've been able to keep it cool. The round pots are a mix of my experimental soil that killed all but one of the peppers.. 🤣 and some more recycled soil. The saved Campari seed ones are doing good and might be far enough along to pick a winner. Might pull a few and transplant if I get to it soon. The tomatillo is doing good too.

A photo of 20 tomato plants and 7 tomatillo plants in two plant trays. One tray is 18 square pots, the other has 9 round pots. The tomatoes are 4-5 inches tall or 10cm ++. ;) There are Chadwick Cherry, Amish Paste, Orange Flamme, Principe Borghese, and San Marzano plus the Rio Grande Tomatillo. These are all from saved seeds.A photo showing 6 tall 3.5 inch square pots with 3-4 saved Campari tomato seedlings in each pot. They are just starting to grow their first true leaves.

Tomatoes and tomatillo thinned to one, and the 2024 Gravenstein scion wood rooting attempt had lots of leaf. I put a little rooting hormone in the water but it's old so I've ordered some new. The cuttings are bagged and off to the side so they're not getting full light.

A photo showing two plant trays with 20 tomato plants and 7 tomatillo. The tomatillo need two plants to pollinate better so 2 extra becomes 4.A photo showing saved Campari tomato seedlings in six tall square pots. There are 3-4 seedlings in each pots. They were all up, uncovered, and off the heat 2 days ago.A photo showing 1 year old Gravenstein apple scion cuttings that have leaves growing. There are four of them. They are in a plastic lidded container that has a hole cut in the lid and it has water in it. They had been stored in moist sealed bags in a refrigerator and the ends were callused up so it's possible they will make roots.

Transplanted some of my #BokChoy & purple #tomatillo plants into larger pots. These starters are all being picked up this weekend by a few of my regular plant buyers here. There's some folks who get plants from me, every year 👩‍🌾

Someone forgot to plant some saved Campari tomato seed so those are 8 days behind the others. Someone also plucked some things and potted them up as extras.

A photo showing a seed starting area that has 3 plant trays with mostly tomato seedligns and some tomatilloes. The left tray was planted on April 1 and has 18 square pots. The middle tray is transplants from the left tray and has 9 recycled round pots with 4 tomatillo, 3 Chadwick cherry, and 2 Flamme tomatoes. The right tray has 6 tall square pots covered with 3 clear bags that have freshly planted saved 'Campari' or 'Mountain Magic' tomato seeds and are on a heat mat. They come from a hybrid tomato so they are not exactly true but last years saved seeds were VERY good tomatoes that grew excellent. There are two 100 watt LED light panels above the trays but they are only turned up about 50% or so at a height of a couple of feet.

All saved tomato seeds from last year have sprouted up and the tomatillo seeds I gathered from the ground in the garden a month ago are up too. Heat mat turned off. They were started on April 1.

A photo of a plant tray with 18 square pots that have new seedlings growing in them. 15 are tomatoes and 3 are tomatillo. The varieties are Amish paste, Chadwick cherry, San Marzano, Flamme, Principe Borghese, and Rio Grande tomatillo. In the upper right is a black container with blue lid that has a hole in it with 4 pieces of apple scion wood sticking out. They have been in cold storage for a year and seem to be alive and have callused up on the end so they are in water to see if they make roots.

GARDEN JOURNAL…
This is just a part of our harvest of pineapple tomatillo. these are destined to be made into fruit leather.

It is a small, tart tasting fruit that looks like cape gooseberry as it is in the same plant family. It is a low growing ground cover that sets the fruit inside a papery husk. Pineapple tomatillo can also be made into a salsa sauce.

Adding to my canstravaganza resume: Making this tomatillo/lime jam with the addition of some jalapeños, which should be tasty. This will use up some of the 11.5 lbs. of tomatillos I froze fall 2023. patijinich.com/tomatillo_and_l?
Some will go into this green tomato/tomatillo chutney since I also have frozen green tomatoes. brooklynfarmgirl.com/green-tom
