Thanks to the Islamic Center of the Conejo Valley for hosting Open Mosque Day, and for asking me to say a few words. Public officials and followers of many faiths were among the attendees.

Thanks especially to Imam Mehtar for noting that we all share a common desire for unity, compassion, safety, and understanding.

The diversity of backgrounds and ideas in Thousand Oaks is one of our greatest strengths.

With much of our city in high and very high fire severity zones, we must do all we can in the areas of fire prevention and resiliency. Toward that end, today I signed letters signaling the city's support of three bills that would enhance fire prevention and response.

Congratulations to all high school students and their parents who took part in "Bill Night," an annual event sponsored by the Miller Y in which students propose and debate proposed laws, one of which goes on to the Y's conference in the Capitol building in Sacramento.

Both the bills and the quality of debate were impressive. I only wish many adults were as civic minded!
