Finally got some clear skies, but it was a full moon so I focused on Ha data. I'll grab some SII and OII data once the moon fades at least a little, but this is 2h35m of Ha data on Tulip nebula. Looking awfully nice so far!

Day 4 of sunspot imaging! The smaller ones seem to have faded (or maybe it was shooting through high clouds?), but the big cluster is awfully pretty.

The big sunspot region continues to rotate into view! Today I was able to see it with my eclipse glasses, which is always neat. I'll definitely assemble a little animation with all of the images I capture because this one is easy to track.

I was on vacation last week and saw some lovely sunspot images, so I took the first opportunity to get some solar images today. I noticed the big spot on the edge, but mistakenly thought it was going rather than coming around. I'll definitely be checking in on that one tomorrow!

After solving the IR LED issue, I pointed my scope at one of my favorite narrowband targets: The Crescent Nebula. This target has incredible detail in H-alpha, but the real star of the show for me is the blue OIII "shell" around it. With only 40 minutes of exposure time on that filter, it's already starting to show and will only get more pronounced with more exposure time.

This version is processed in SHO, meaning Sulfur-2 (naturally red) is mapped to the red channel, H-alpha (naturally red) is mapped to the green channel, and Oxygen-3 (naturally blue) is mapped to the blue channel. This is a less natural than the other HOO image, but highlights the different emissions more clearly as SII and Ha are difficult to distinguish visually.

I posted last week about problems with my new camera setup - I have updated the blog post with solutions to those problems! If you've got a new ToupTek ATR585M bundle and are having troubles with washed out images or weird stripes, stop on by.

Thrilled to report I am clear of the issues with my ToupTek ATR585M rig! This is half a night (about 1 hour per filter) on M81 and M82. This pair is already looking awesome and will look even better with a bunch more exposure time and some Ha in the mix. Let the fun begin!

Wow, this is my clearest solar image to date! Between excellent seeing conditions and pinpoint focus, I really like how this image came out. Check out the fine details in the sunspots!

UPDATE: There is an issue with the filter wheel where it leaves the IR LED (used to confirm filter position I believe) on. This effectively created a light leak on every sub/flat/dark/bias. ToupTek has a firmware update that fixes the issue and I can confirm that my flats look drastically different after the update. I think I'm going to have to toss all of the frames I've captured so far, but I'll report back after imaging tonight.

Hello astro friends! I could use your help with some troubleshooting. I just got a new ToupTek ATR585M mono camera and I'm unable to get my flats to work properly. Without flats, I can faintly see the dust and with flats, they show up very prominently. I have tried a bunch of different ADUs. I wrote up a blog post to show the issue because the flat overlay is the best way to demonstrate the issue. Thoughts?!

I got a new monochrome astro camera! This means that I use filters to capture the different colors/wavelengths of light and then combine them in post-processing. This image is a broadband image, so I use red, green, blue, and a clear filter called luminance. This is 16 subs on each filter (+ an extra red because I was messing around) for a grand total of 3h15m of exposure time.

I got a new astro camera and rather than being color like a DSLR, it is monochrome. This means that I use filters to capture the different colors/wavelengths of light and then combine them in post-processing. For solar imaging, I simply shoot in monochrome and then colorize during post-processing. I've included the mono version and my colorized version.

I remember seeing the Horsehead nebula in my parents’ encyclopedia as a kid. I was amazed at how such a thing could exist. And now technologyy has evolved so far, that I can take the same picture from my own backyard! Here it is accompanied by the Flame nebula in the lower left together with the star Allnitak, which is the left most star in Orion’s belt. #horsehead #B33 #NGC2023 #horseheadnebula #flamenebula #astronomy #astrophotography #deepsky #backyardastronomy #astroshots #astrophoto #Space #universe #galaxy #universetoday #nightsky #stars #galaxy #nightphotography #skywatcher #touptek #backyardastrophotography

M104 is my favourite galaxy!
So very photogenic with its distinct dust lane around the central bulge of stars, hanging in space like a small pendant - or a Sombrero apparently. In fact it’s composed of several hundred billion individual stars and is estimated at a diameter of 50.000 lightyears so the only reason for it appearing small is its mind-melting distance of 28 million lightyears (meaning that the fastest thing in the universe - light - has travelled for 28 million years before it hit my telescope in my backyard. #M104 #sombrerogalaxy #astronomy #astrophotography #deepsky #backyardastronomy #astroshots #astrophoto #Space #universe #galaxy #universetoday #nightsky #stars #galaxy #nightphotography #skywatcher #touptek #backyardastrophotography

I am just one step away from completing the configuration of my final imaging setup.
One more evening of tilt correction, and I’ll be ready to get back to imaging.
