Starscream's transformation to beast mode isn't nearly as complicated as Optimus'. It's reminiscent of Kingdom Airrazor, but anyone who has both figures in hand can see it's a case of shared engineering, not mold reuse.

The hips and arms transform completely differently, and the back of his robot elbows become "thrusters" beneath his tail in his falcon mode. The falcon neck is also longer than Airrazor's, making him look more bird-like. The molded corneas in the eyes and mechanical details on his back and feathers look great; these are clearly robot beasts and not Beast-Wars-style disguises.

Sadly, the large gap between the robot chest and thighs when he's in this mode disrupts that illusion, and tabs prevent you from closing the gap. And while the wings do fold down when he standing, it doesn't look as natural, in part because the rifles are in the way.

Still, he's a great design, and the little details go a long way toward making up for an imperfect beast mode.

According to Wikipedia, "The tengu...usually falls somewhere in between a large, monstrous bird and a wholly anthropomorphized being", and this appears to be the basis for Starscream's robot mode. While Optimus had a samurai helmet in robot mode, Starscream's helmet echoes his falcon form, a very nice added detail.

Starscream's arm cannons are replaced by flintlock rifles in this era, but he can also wield his alt mode's tail feathers as a bladed fan weapon. The cockpit chest of his modern incarnation has become a layered "robe" which looks downright elegant.

The ankles have a little forward-and-back articulation, but not a lot. His wrists are on ball joints, which makes them easier to pose with both weapons. And his wings can be folded in a variety of ways, depending on how you'd like to display him.

I feel like a lighter gray would suit the character better, and some silver highlights would make the blades look that much nastier. Maybe I'll touch him up later.

For me, the best thing about #Transformers is transforming them, and the more clever and original the transformation, the more I like it. Optimus is a Deluxe-sized figure at 5.5 inches (thanks again, Hasbro Pulse) but the transformation is ingenious at that scale.

Basically: the robot shoulders become the ox forelegs; the hind legs are hidden in the robot thighs; and the robot arms and lower legs form the oxcart. It takes a while to tab everything together, especially with the oxcart wheels in the way, but the end result is satisfyingly clean from the front, sides and back. The spear mounts on the roof in one piece.

The idea of changing Optimus' trailer into a cart is inspired genius, IMO. I like the little details like the blue windows on the cart echoing the ones on the robot's chest, while the silver and gold paint on the harness, roof and wheels break up the gray "wood" just enough. There's room for customizers to add more color in this mode, but I think it looks great as-is.

The ox is red and his harness is gray, while the oxcart has a gray roof, red sides, blue windows, and gray wheels with gold around the axles. His spear is attached to the roof of the cart. Optimus looks great. Aside from the large and awkward-looking oxcart wheels on his knees, his robot mode is clean front and back. The armor on his arms forms the roof of the oxcart and isn't removable, but is analogous to his modern incarnation's smokestacks anyway.

His naginata spear (thanks, Hasbro Pulse) has a detachable head so it can be inserted into one or both fists, and his wrists are ball joints to make this even easier to pose with.

Sadly his ankles only tilt inwards, not forward or backward, but one can get around this when posing him. Also, it's strange that Starscream has his arm guns but Optimus doesn't have a rifle in this era.

These are minor complaints for me. The real fun is in transforming him, anyway.

#Transformers Timelines goes to samurai-era Japan! And once again, Hasbro has gone all-out on this set.

Let’s start with the packaging. These photos don’t do them justice, since you can’t see how the characters are embossed on the outer jacket. Slide it off, and it is designed to look like gold-inlaid black wood.

The box opens like a book, same as the “Hearts of Steel” sets did, and Optimus and Starscream are displayed behind windows framed by more gold. It’s too bad that this wasn’t available before Christmas, because this would be a beautiful gift set for anybody.
