I love #opensource and #distributed #peertopeer systems. They are essential to our future. Want to be free from tyranny? This is the way to go!

Instead of #RepoTheGeneticOpera and #GATTACA, let's do @vulpinelabs
Instead of hyper capitalist bullshit, do #incredibleedible and #transitiontowns with #urbanpollinators and #permaculture
Instead of proprietary software and patents, do #linux and #openpatents (defensive publications)
Instead of copyright trolling, do #netlabels and embracing the beneficial impacts of #sharing #piracy! #sharingiscaring
Instead of monopolies on your data and what you watch, do #Peertube and #Fediverse

We can shape the future by choosing what we use and what impacts us!

@GhostOnTheHalfShell
> that means restoring ecology, integrating psychology into our communities and making our communities are free so that our basic daily activities don’t require cars, and our food and water are drawn from the area around us

Ae. Rob Hopkins and the
Transition Towns crews had the right idea almost 20 years ago;

"What difference can Transition groups and others doing this work make? It often starts with some small initiative like planting trees or wildflowers, sharing food at a community fridge or bringing people together to talk about the future.

"Often this cascades, as people get to know and trust each other, to see what they can achieve together, and learn from other groups and places what else is possible.

"Transition groups have set up farmers’ markets, community food-growing, waste-food cafes, nature recovery projects, cycling and electric car clubs and community-owned renewable energy generation."

Did things start small in your Transition project? Have they grown in new and unexpected directions??

Members of different Transition groups visit a community-run forest garden in Ilford, London, and listen attentively as one of the volunteers on the project, Rakesh, talks about how it was set up in the corner of a Victorian public park.

"Both Transition and green wizardry are based on the ideas that peak oil, and peak various other things too, will lead to a future of economic contraction and declining net energy availability, where the communities that are most successful are those that have most successfully strengthened and refocused their local economies in advance."

Four weeks until polling day - how can this tumultuous time be an opportunity to highlight what matters to your community? And to bring care and compassion into the fray, when elections can quickly become about what divides us?

The Transition movement is not party political - but many issues we are concerned about, well-informed about and building practical solutions around are deeply political with a small ‘p’: food resilience, who produces our energy and who has a say in shaping our local places.

We’ve gathered resources and reflections to help Transition and community groups navigate and engage with the election in our latest blog - from organising a hustings, to engaging with candidates, amplifying seldom-heard voices to other causes to explore.

"Ultimately this is not - and should not be - the only time we have power. Of course it matters who is in the House of Commons and what they do there, but it matters too how we empower ourselves and each other to shape the future of our communities.
All year long, Transition groups seek to be places where people can come together and build common ground, focusing on our shared concern, vision and the practical action we can take to make our places better, thriving and fairer for everyone. This work continues long after polling day."

How a small group, looking a scarred landscape, put Lindow Moss on the map and secure the restoration of its peat bog habitat.

A landscape partnership Transition Wilmslow helped form has been awarded £250,000 to do just that - amazing result!

In 2008, Transition Norwich asked could our city feed itself?

Hodmedod, a business focused on bringing the beans back to British kitchens, emerged from this, and is now thriving and working with farmers to grow and sell ancient, novel and humble peas, beans and more.

Co-founder Josiah Meldrum will tell us the story at our next Transition Alive session as we delve deep into the potential of community action - and our Movement - to make real and lasting change.

Free, online, all welcome to join us for Alive to the power of building alternatives, next Tuesday 5 March at 7pm.

Transition Alive! Kicks off tomorrow, online 7pm, with Part one: Alive to the Call of Justice. Stories of community just transition in action from Belfast, Bolton, London and beyond. Don't miss it!

Meanwhile, Part 2 is shaping up to be a mindblowing delight as we explore the power of building alternatives. On Tuesday 5 March, we showcase projects emerging from Transition to make impact and change in energy, food production, how we organise and widen the invitation to climate action. With:

🫛 Josiah Meldrum, co-founder of Hodmedod, born out of Transition Norwich’s work on local food networks
⚡️Pete Capener, Bath & West Community Energy - BWCE, one of several renewable providers initiated by Transition groups
🤝 Taruna Mistry and Samantha Woods, on Transition Leicester's work to open more avenues of climate action and collaboration with Gujarati speakers
🛞 Craig Dunn, Scottish Communities Climate Action Network, the Transition hub in Scotland, creating 20 climate action hubs across the nation

We are privileged to be joined by two keynote listeners to share their insights and reflections on what they’ve heard:

⭐️ Anthea Lawson, campaigner with Global Witness and author “The Entangled Activist”
⭐️ Nick Romeo, reporter and author of “The Alternative: How to Build a Just Economy"

Join them for what promises to be a rich conversation, next Tuesday 5 March, 7-9pm: events.transitionmovement.org/
