The Scottish American Memorial, or Scots American War Memorial, is in West Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh. It was called "The Call 1914", and it was erected in 1927 and shows a kilted infantryman looking towards Castle Rock. Behind the main statue is a frieze showing queues of men answering the call by following a kilted pipe band. The memorial was given by Scottish-Americans to honour Scots who had served in the first World War.

Lest we forget.

Bronze statue of a kilted soldier seated on a stone base, holding a rifle, with a contemplative expression looking upwards. The base has an inscription reading "THE CALL 1914 - A Tribute From Men and Women of Scottish Blood and Sympathies in the United States of America to Scotland." Below the statue are red commemorative poppy wreaths with a few small bouquets. Behind the statue, a detailed bronze relief shows a historical battle scene. The setting is partially surrounded by green bushes under a gray sky.

On the west side of the Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh is the Ross Fountain. Sculpted in the neoclassical style by Jean-Baptise Jules Klagmann and originally cast at the foundry of Antoine Durene in Sommevoire near Paris.

This remarkable sculpture has at its base, mermaids, cherubs, walrus and lion heads while at the top there are four female figures which represent science, arts, poetry and industry - a nice shot here with Edinburgh Castle in the background!

Usually I try to prevent to appear in my own photos but when seeing Adam Waters seven years after my last visit in #Edinburgh I had to talk to him again (he's a Metal fan and teacher by the way!) and couldn't resist posting this historical incorrect shield wall of #Braveheart (left) and a Viking-wannabe (right, me) here.

Adam's a great guy and is part of the #RoyalMile just beneath #EdinburghCastle for more than twenty years now. All money he collects is donated to children for the fight against Leukemia and it is told he raised more than 2 million pounds over the years - read a great anecdote on Adam's story here:

A man in traditional Scottish tribal costume extending his hand toward the camera. He has a blue and white painted face, wearing a fur and leather outfit with ornate accessories, including feathers and metal chains. Behind him is a stone building with a large window reflecting the street scene. A decorative shield rests against the building beside him.

Even after seeing it for the second time, you sometimes need a #potterhead do draw the conclusion that #VictoriaStreet in #Edinburgh looks quite similar to #DiagonAlley in #HarryPotter. By all means this scenery is always worth a visit and once you step down the stairs, you will definitely reach the world of #HarryPotter as you'll find the newly-created museum or #TheElephantHouse where at least some parts of the Harry Potter-universe were initially created (the original one was located near George IV bridge and burned down some time ago).

Split-view of two cobblestone streets lively with pedestrians in a historic European city. The left image features a row of aged stone buildings with ground floor businesses, including a Mexican restaurant with red outdoor seating under colorful flag bunting. The right image captures a wider street scene bustling with people, lined with various shops under a series of multicolored flags stretched across from building to building, and a notable red and orange building visible in the background.

Cobblestone street filled with people, flanked by vibrant blue and red buildings, leading to an old gothic-style structure. A row of people stands to the left, queuing outside a blue building. Multicolored flags are strung above the street.

While the publicity around #JKRowling isn't the best at the moment quite rightly, it is undoubted what she has created in terms of #HarryPotter. Once you are in #Edinburgh and manage to see #TheRoyalMile and if you're a #Potterhead (and even if you're not), this place at the #CityChambers shows the hands of JK Rowling immortalized in the ground of the city Harry's world was created in.

You'll find this place when walking through the entrance, turning left towards a small door!

There are few sounds that make my flesh really crawl on this planet - but the tunes of Scottish #bagpipes is indeed something I cloud listen to for hours, being simply overjoyed and calm...

"I play the tunes for my brothers and Glen
The woods of my childhood call me again
For the colours of freedom so far I did roam
Cause I'm the piper and I coming home"

(GRAVE DIGGER, "Coming Home")

A Scottish bagpiper in traditional dress, including a tartan kilt, sporran, and feathered hat, plays bagpipes on a sunny day beside a building with classical architecture. Behind him, a shop window displays various scarves and draped mannequins. His shadow is visible on the building wall.

Great view on the St. James’s Park, looking like the Island of #Avalon expecting our visit...

"When waters stirred lay silent
Mistress let the mists descend
Thy tears cannot thaw Death's cold heart
His sombre gaze defies legend
More so than thine lest thy dew-lidded eyes
Art for the Banshee's song
Or our souls entwined like vein upon
The haunted shores of Avalon"

June 8th, 2024 in 1376 marked the death of Edward Plantagenet (of Woodstock), who died aged 45 exactly 649 years ago. Being one of the famous and ruthless actors in the Hundred Years War and the only Prince of Wales who didn't become king, he was laid to rest in Canterbury Cathedral where his surcoat, helmet, shield, and gauntlets are still preserved.

Some years ago I visited Canterbury to participate in the history preserved at Canterbury Cathedral.

A metallic sculpture of a medieval knight in full armor reclines with interlaced hands near his chest and a peaceful expression on his face. The knight wears a detailed helmet with chainmail, ornately engraved armor showcasing floral patterns, and jointed gauntlets. His legs are slightly bent, and his feet rest near a three-dimensional lion head, part of the sculpture. The setting includes a dark background with metallic bars, possibly indicating an indoor location.

Many cities have their own flair which makes them simply special. Looking over the river Thames, I see many aspects that made me fell in love with London. Time to visit this place again next months: Finally!

Aerial view of the River Thames in London, featuring busy water traffic including boats and barges. The Shard skyscraper dominates the left side, while various other modern buildings line the riverbanks. Multiple bridges span the river, and the cityscape includes recognizable silhouettes such as St. Paul's Cathedral in the distance under a clear blue sky.

Years ago, we used to travel from Belgian #Oostende to Ramsgate in eastern Kent before switching over to the route #Dunkerque - #dover.

This scenery shows the lovely ferry port of Ramsgate in the morning when we made a quick side-trip to #Canterbury back in 2015.

Wide angle view of a coastal town with clear blue skies over calm sea waters; the town features densely packed traditional buildings and modern structures visible behind a harbor filled with boats and bordered by a protective seawall.

Despite having my opinion towards Christendom and rather following the Nordic beliefs, I always admired the ways especially cathedrals were built in the well-known gothic style.

It's amazing what people were able to create in the Middle Ages just for God's sake and if you've ever read Ken Follett's "The Pillars of the Earth" you will know what I am talking about - this archway of Canterbury Cathedral's inner courtyard is a piece of architectural excellence in terms of a gothic building!
