For the time being our primary account will be @theweathersystem@tenforward.social this will be the backup for now until we settle down #introduction - Updated: 2025-08-10

We're The Weather System (Athena's Realm System), We're Trans fem, and we're an officially diagnosed autistic, bipolar and dissociative identity disorder system, we a collection of various leftist, and believe strongly in queer, and neurodiversity rights movements, we view plurality in general as neurodivergence

Our pronouns are Su/Sudo/Suselves, however She/Her/Herselves, and They/Them/Theirselves

We are most likely to toot about
#Medicine, with focus on #Genetics, #Epigenetics, #Bioinformatics, and #Neuroscience giving our focus back in uni was Genetics of Human Disease, and Neuroscience but we are likely to talk about a whole range of medical topics, besides medicine we are likely to toot about #meteorology and #geology, with specific interests in #SynopticMeteorology #TropicalCyclones / #Hurricanes / #Typhoons / #TropicalStorms, #ExtratropicalCyclones, #SubtropicalCyclones, and #Tornadoes, among other topic, and we may toot about #Geology, #Minerals, and #Vulcanology, and what ever else is on our mind, we collected #MyLittlePony and are a fan of every generation of MLP, also we collect #WildManes, as well as #MonsterHigh and #LittlestPetShop and Radioactive stuff and play #EliteDangerous

edit extra info: [Also to note we're storm chasers, so we may occasionally post photos and media from chases, our focus is usually on Tropical Cyclones within the Australian Region Basin with mainly focus on the Coral Sea, these will usually be marked with the Tropical Cyclone and Hurricane tags]

See attached thread for System Information, System Membership 58+

Our system name is subject to change, it was previously the Athena's Realm System, however only one member, arguably two members made that decision on behalf of the entire system, without consulting us, so we're in the process of trying out system names to see which fits us best, but for the time being we will display both "Athena's Realm" and the current trialing system name so it is less confusing for those who know us by our old system name

Our primary instance is shutting down and we ended up repurposing another account however it appears that instance is unstable and may be shut down at a future date so 3rd times hopefully don't have to jump ship again for a while #introduction - Updated: 2025-08-10

Our primary instance is shutting down and Elly is no longer in the system so we're going to repurpose this account as our system account as we have neither the energy or time to look for a new instance [this is copied from old, and will be edited over time until we've established] #introduction - Updated: 2024-10-08

“Anticipating [shifts in climate] risk is vital for designing effective strategies and reducing the loss and damages from future extremes.

“It remains essential for the insurance industry to collaborate across sectors – and include the communities directly exposed to #ClimateRisk – to extend the use of cat models beyond their traditional insurance applications.”

This recent #JCRR article demonstrates the ability and potential flexibility of catastrophe models to quantify impacts for both economic and non-economic loss and damage by exploring the impact of climate change on inland flood risk in Malawi, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

According to Gallagher Re, the total insured loss from #TropicalCyclones in the contiguous U.S. from 1990 to 2023 was US$556 billion. Normalised to 2023 U.S. dollar values, this translates to an Average Annual Loss (AAL) of US$16.6 billion [...] a repeat of the 1990 to 2023 tropical cyclone season today would result in significantly higher insured losses as a consequence of exposure growth, sea-level rise, and a climate ~0.5°C warmer than 1990: journalofcrr.com/research/03-0

To understand the impacts of climate change on a given natural hazard, insurers commonly use exploratory scenarios. In this latest article, Pope and Phibbs use a +2°C above pre-industrial climate scenario to analyse possible changes to insured losses from a present-day baseline due to #TropicalCyclones in the contiguous U.S.

Tropical cyclones represent a danger to life, property, and the economies of communities. Researchers who study #tropicalcyclones have focused on remote observations using space-based platforms to image these #storms, inform forecasts, better predict landfall, and improve understanding of storm dynamics and #precipitation evolution...

A busy #hurricane season is expected. Here’s how it will be different from the last
A warm -- yet no longer record-hot -- strip of waters across the #Atlantic #Ocean is forecast to help fuel development of 17 named #tropicalcyclones during the season that runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, according to Colorado State University researchers. Of those tropical cyclones, nine are forecast to become #hurricanes, with four of those expected to reach "major" hurricane strength.

“The main reason we don't know what the frequency of Tropical Cyclones will be in 10 years' time is because we don't know what the frequency of Tropical Cyclones is today.”

So, what to do?

Looks like Tropical Cyclone Alfred is gonna core us, we'll be in the south west quadrant eyewall if he landfalls with current best track, now he has turned back towards the coast our weather is probably going start deteriorating, with a very large storm force windfield we may even start experiencing it tomorrow depending on velocity, but we will experience storm force long before the eye reaches the coast due to its size, but Thursday to Friday is the forecast landfall - Typhie

edit: giving we were already planning to chase this one, but have since decided its probably unneccesary we will be filming during it

Rae, Seru and Alfred are all churning as the region is in the peak of a season that starts in November and ends in April. "

Tropical cyclone (Storm 🌪️)

A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system with a low-pressure area, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain and squalls. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is called a hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic st...
