Set out this morning to test out #FT8 on my #truSDX using my little portable #20m loaded whip antenna. A local coffee shop has a nice patio, and really nice coffee: a great spot to operate #QRP from!

Sadly the USB cable I brought with me didn't work... but, the RBN did pick me up on CW using battery power and just over 3W!

I know about #POTA, #SOTA, #IOTA, #COTA, and even #WMPLOTA ... but what about starting Coffee Shops On The Air (#CSOTA)? Just a thought...

Jemand Tipps?

@DG1JAN

Finalized my #QRPlab #qmx build today 😍 after some hours of sweating, the small TRX is running out of the box. Compared to my #qdx or #trusdx builds, I have to admit it was quite challenging due to the enormous part density. But nevertheless, the first SSB and FT8 was successful. But I will need to build me a new external mic with a proper electret capsule, my modified Chinese Mic has much too low gain

So, the blown-up (tr)uSDX probably won't be ready for my vacation, so out of desparation, I bought a Xiegu #X6100 so I have at least something to work with on my vacation.

Any hints on what I shall do first? Of course, firmware update.

Which alternatives shall I look into? R1CBU firmware maybe?

Based on the hard work of Adam, K6ARK I designed a PCB which does all the work of the connections and designed a case for it.

I think it looks like a Turret from the game Portal, hence its name.

Exactly. #zbitx is not a SOTA radio, (except to warm your hands in cold weather as your 18650s drain). CW unuseable as of now: missed dits and dahs, strange echo after a few minutes (delayed RX processing?). Also, much heavier radio. Screen unreadable in a bright outdoors setting. Even with all the problems (birdies, unreadable in the sun, PCB-mounted connectors, less bands, etc.) my #trusdx is open-source and a better radio. No FT8 though (acoustically-coupled FT8CN).

You wouldn’t think this would work but it does! attached to a metal fence with Tomato wire and a Bluetooth adapter with the cheapest BT headphones, a 10Ah PD power supply and a . Makes for a great setup to adjust my antenna and hear feedback in realtime.

Put together a small CW QRP practice kit for a recent trip. The key to this for me has been the and this super rad USB-C PD to 12v barrel plug. PD seems to keep the battery on whereas USB-A 3 won’t. Funny enough non-fancy USB has no problem pushing out 5v all day long!

Beware of these cheap #qrp antenna tuners! It was a bit fiddly to tune up at first - especially without a counterpoise - but seemed to work.

But after taking it to the beach last weekend it wouldn't tune up at all. I was confused as to why and kept trying which was a bad idea - now I have a #truSDX RF board to repair ... 😑

Taking the culprit apart showed the antenna was no longer connected because of the poor soldering job on enamelled wire ... 😡

I've updated my #truSDX battery back for Quansheng batteries to house a little voltage boosting module: thingiverse.com/thing:6939747

I'm pretty happy with that as it gives me the full output power while still being a very small package overall with no dangling wires.

This means that the inevitable stress from external connectors and wires sometimes tears the connectors off the PCB, taking with them part of the PCB tracks.

Other QRP radios (QCX, some Chinese SDX's) have connectors mechanically fixed to their case.

My friend EA5IML and I have, in separate operations, fitted wire bridges between the connectors and components (inductances, an 7805 regulator).

Last night I could not figure out what was
wrong with the antenna connector. :(

It is the third time my (tr)uSDX undergoes surgery. This time, I could not revive it.

I've enjoyed it for nineteen months.

My (tr)uSDX had a number of known problems: an audio oscillation at high volume (even with headphones), birdies in the middle of ham bands (14286 kHz), no easy way to reach a split mode, etc.

However, it has a *design flaw*. The antenna connector and the power connector (among others) are directly soldered to the PCB but not mechanically supported.
