Tried out #TrueNAS_Scale really is overkill for a simple NAS. Particularly when coming from using Ubuntu server which has been my media server OS for as long as I've had one. May give #ZimaOS a go next

#noAd

- eingebaute PSU (daher nur kleines Stromkabel nötig)

@decryption I have been too thrifty, fly high errors on one disk, and reallocated sectors (rising) on another. Scrutiny reports 12 month failure chances of 25% and 55% respectively.

If anyone knows a good use for a near death 10TB drive I'm entirely ears.

#truenas #truenas_scale users beware, a big happy green 'success' on your SMART tests does not mean no errors. I'm not surprised it is being depreciated in the next version.

So I'm building myself a #DIY #NAS in a #Jonsbo N1. I'm planning to try #TrueNAS on it. I want to move #Plex there and all my #selfhosted services, I currently host for myself and my family. For now, public services will remain under #Proxmox on a mini PC.

Here is a build: pangoly.com/en/build/share/vQe

Hardware ordered. No drives included, because I'm planning to rob my #SynologyNAS for two drives.

I installed TrueNAS Scale "Electric Eel" in a VM to take a look around the UI and it looks nice. Setting up a couple of services via docker seemed pretty reasonable, and I'm sure I'll be able to replicate my Core setup (currently based on jails) if I allocate a day to the migration and take my time with it.

I'll be sad to say goodbye to Core, but it will be nice to install an Intel Arc GPU and get hardware encoding/decoding in Jellyfin.

Any other #Asustor #NAS users out there? I feel constrained by the ADM ecosystem and software and I've been wanting to replace it on our #AS6510T with something less under Asustor's control and more under my own, but I'm a chicken and afraid of (a) borking something or (b) losing proprietary hardware functionality.

Anyone out there in a similar situation succeeded in installing #TrueNAS Scale, in particular?

Got my new #nas #HomeLab up and running! Using #truenas_scale due to the #Debian base and the ease of setup.

Disk arrangement:
Boot: 256GB NVME
Storage: 6x 6TB spinning rust in a RAIDZ2 (Effective 24TB with 2 redundant drives)

I wish the work they've done could be pushed upstream so that FreeBSD-based TrueNAS doesn't disappear.

I wish companies would throw their weight behind FreeBSD rather than abandon it. As prominent examples, AMD and Intel could support their graphics chips rather than letting volunteers write code for them, and MediaTek could support their wifi chips.

I live in hope that I will be pleasantly surprised...

The serial terminal emulator was painful - I needed to log in every few minutes or even if I switched tab!

I liked the idea of having official apps instead of community plugins, but with this experience I'm not convinced it's ready for my particular use case.

I'm disappointed that iX "has no plans for a FreeBSD 14-based release". I like the stability that CORE provides, and the jail system is clear and simple.

I tried TrueNAS Scale a few days ago. It...did not go well.

In CORE, I had a small jail set up to run a proxy server, which had a different IP address (this was important as it meant I didn't need to specify a port number on the local network).

To set that up in SCALE I needed to create an entire VM (the nginx proxy manager app didn't see to allow assigning a separate IP address).

Having a real battle getting posix permissions to behave as expected on #truenas_scale . Considering starting over with #nfsv4 rather than #posix. Is there any compelling reason to use posix ACLs or avoid nfsv4?

My new-to-me server was finally in a state to be racked! 2U, 12 drives, and enough CPU and memory for it to serve as my main backup, NAS, and media server to replace the 15 year old gaming PC which I've been using for the last 8 years.

Very excited to benchmark and start moving stuff over! I also took advantage of this to move some things around and make room for the 1U router I want to put in.

@twipped @ddl Nope, #TrueNAS_Scale is based on #Debian.

Ahwell, Graphs lie. This one shows 23% Average CPU usage, 36% highest. But CPU Temp 85°C?
Nope, it's not a broken CPU fan, that thing works nicely, I can hear it...
It is only one value of the CPU valuesthis graph seems to take in account, the others are ignored. (user/system/nice/wait/..., more than one, anyone?)

System was busy on reading LOTS of data from 8xspinning rust and writing into the cache M2 SSDs and off to the network.
