भविष्यवाणी का प्रभाव

Dans les îles Tonga, une équipe vient d’étudier un gros rocher calcaire isolé, localement nommé Maka Lahi (ce qui signifie littéralement… « gros rocher »). Ce n’est pas le seul bloc isolé de l’île Tongatapu, la plus grande et peuplée de l’archipel. Mais il s’agit d’un des plus gros : 14 × 12 × 6,7 m, pour une masse estimée de 1 180 tonnes ! Surtout, il a l’air « posé » là, à 200 mètres de la côte et à une altitude de 39 m.
Les locaux ont différentes légendes pour expliquer l’étrange présence de ces rochers, dont une où la divinité Maui les aurait jetés sur un coq trop bruyant… Les scientifiques, quant à eux, avancent une explication plus prosaïque : tout indique qu’il s’agit de blocs erratiques déposés par des tsunamis. D’après leurs simulations, il a fallu une vague d’au moins 50 mètres de hauteur pour transporter Maka Lahi à son emplacement actuel. Parmi les sources possibles d’un tel tsunami, l’effondrement partiel d’un volcan voisin dans l’océan est l’hypothèse la plus probable.
